Christians believe that the most important feature about Catholic funerals is that they convey the Christian hope in eternal life and the resurrection of the body on the last day. Every component of the Catholic funeral rites should express these fundamental beliefs and hopes (OSV,2018). In the religion catholicism it is a ritual that when a catholic is on the verge of death, a priest will be brought in to administer special rights and holy communion of the sick person/s (Everplans, 2018). There are many strict rules of do’s and don’ts about catholic funerals, one main don’ts is to never have a catholic funeral on a catholic holy day or celebration. Some of the holy days where a funeral shall not be held on include; holy thursday, good friday, holy saturday, easter sunday, all sundays during the period of advent. Catholic Funerals may be held on Ash wednesday although the Ashes of the deceased person may not be able to be spread within the church. Catholic funerals may be held in catholic churches or chapels. Catholic funerals are divided into different sections, these are the vigil service, funeral liturgy and the rights of committal. In the first section of the mass (the Vigil service) This is a time to acknowledge the life of the dead and to give them to God. Within this time we ask God to look after the deceased and take care of them. Within this section of the service sacred readings from scriptures are read along with reflection and prayers. In the second section (funeral liturgy). This is where the church gathers with the family and friends of the dead to thank God for looking over them for their times of being alive. This section is about an act of worship and not grieving the fact that the person is gone (USCCB, 2018). The last section is the rite of committal.
