We have found that Fred Hollows and Amy Purdy both tie in with the theme of health care because both have dedicated their lives to helping others and although both are very different and come from different generations they both share the same theme of health care. In doing thorough research on both of our people we also came to the realization that goal number four of the Stuartholme goals fit best with the general topic of health care and what both Amy Purdy and Fred Hollow’s aimed to achieve, the goal being “To educate to a social awareness that impels to action”. This can be shown through Amy Purdy’s non-profit organisation for people with physical disabilities which helps them to play action sports. And Fred Hollows work …show more content…
with indigenous communities in Australia and in third-world countries, he also trained hundreds of surgeons to be able to perform trachoma eye surgery.
Amy Purdy has endured great ordeals which began at the very young age of 19 with her getting bacterial meningitis and having to lose her legs as a result. When she was 18 her future looked bright she was a normal happy girl who had just become an adult with the world looking bright, she felt like she could do anything and believed she had no limits. One year later she was hospitalized and had her legs amputated as a result of bacterial meningitis. That day she had walked into the hospital thinking she had a cold not knowing that, that was the day her life would never be the same again. She was a young girl who thought had her entire life to figure out all the important stuff in her ted talk she says “all I wanted was to be free”.
While In hospital she was in a coma for several months when she finally awoke she was informed of what had happened to her leg. She was very dismayed and upset of what had happened. She went into a state of depression and refused to leave the hospital. Amy Purdy was faced with a spilt road one which was an easy smooth road but didn’t really lead to much, it would lead her to just be another sad tragic story someone who is lost and forgotten someone who is constantly dependant on their family because they can’t help themselves. Or the harder road which was bumpy and hard to get through but in the end she could achieve and do the things she had always wanted regardless of her disability. Amy when she was faced with the decision to choice chose the easy road but as she started going down it she realized that, that wasn’t the road for her she isn’t a person who just gives up when they see an obstacle. So she turned around and went up the harder road because she knew that no matter how difficult it gets she has the support of her family and god to guide her. As she said “It’s believing in those dreams and facing our fears head on that allows us to live our lives beyond our limits.”
After some therapy and support from her family and especially husband she realized that although she didn’t have her legs it didn’t mean that she could achieve what she had always dreamed of. She just had to adjust the road to her dreams to fit her needs! As she mentioned in the Ted video “Our borders and our obstacles can only do two things: (1) stop us in our tracks, or (2) force us to get creative.” So she got out of the hospital and decided to peruse her dreams as a pro snowboarder. She found that snowboarding in her prosthetic legs was harder than anticipated and she could not find and prosthetic legs that suited the activity that she wanted to do so other than giving up she decided to change that not only for herself but for other as well. She created with the help of a prosthetic maker she created her vey own prosthetic legs that could bend and move the way that she wanted them to, to be able to snowboard and do action sports in general. When in interview for people magazine she said “I was literally pieced back together in order to survive,” Amy added. “I say no [about changing her life back to what it was]. I absolutely live the life of my dreams. I got this second chance at life and I live it.”
As said in the Hebrews 13:16 scripture in the bible “do not neglect to do well and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to god.” This means to not be selfish and to share what you have with others because it is the right thing to do in the lord’s eyes. Amy Purdy could have chosen to keep her prosthetic legs that she made to herself and only chosen to benefit her. But instead she decided to follow in gods footsteps and to do well and to share what she had so that others who may not be as privileged may have the same opportunities as she does. Therefore Daniel Gale and Amy Purdy founded Adaptive Action Sports in 2005 to help create opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities to get involved in skateboarding and snowboarding and all action sports. At the time there were limited resources for those of us who skate and snowboard and have some sort of physical disability. AAS was the first organization of its kind to focus on bringing these types of sports to the disabled community.
Adaptive action sports is the first Adaptive snowboard and skateboard specific non-profit organization.
Adaptive action sports creates skateboard, snowboard and other action sport camps, events and programs for youth, young adults and wounded veterans living with permanent physical disabilities, TBI and PTSD.

As mentioned Amy Purdy is the best example of a true hero because of the ordeal she faced and the way she was able to overcome it. Although the journey was difficult she overcame the obstacles she faced with the support of her family and friends and her loving husband and supporters she got through it and in doing so not only helped herself but those in the same boat as her. To conclude I want to leave you with a question put out by Amy Purdy “If my life were a book, and I were the author, how would I want this story to
go?”
