Similarities Between Grose And Rosin's 'The Short Leash'

Through the years, countless parents have become more cautious about their children’s security to prevent harms. Yet this has had negative implications of preventing exploration of society by the child. In “The Short Leash” Grose and Rosin demonstrate this identical concept that through the generations child independence has degenerated because of the restraints placed by their parents. Even though some might have opinionated that with the current innovations children are able to explore the world more, this is not the case. A lot of the activities that were standard in 1970 such as “sneaking out, petty theft, amateur arson, drugs, and sexual experimentation” and many other “wild and reckless” activities or even walking 5 miles from home are unacceptable today. In 1970 there was “80 percent of third graders that walked” to and from school but in the 1990s, which is the current generation of children, there are “only 9 percent” that can walk to and from school. Much of this is a fear of child abduction, which has become a commonly known topic that publicized by several shows such as Kidnapped: Child Abduction in America. Even though child abduction has increased in the past few years individuals in society are failing to realize the reason for this increase. As Grose and Rosin state, “ a child is more likely to be abducted by a stranger today… but that’s almost entirely due to estranged spouses or parent kidnappings”. So the precaution that various parents have regarding child abduction is invalid and much of its support is with falsified
