The first trait that both Santiago and Rudy use is manhood does not suffer despite weakness. This means that it does not matter how young, old, or disabled a person may be their manhood does not suffer because of it. For Rudy this trait is very apparent because Rudy has a small stature, but that does not stop him from trying to play for the Notre Dame American football team. Rudy is “ 5 foot [nothing], 100 [pounds] and [nothing]” yet still plays on a team of people that are two time his size, but he does not let that stop him from playing.(Pizzo) Santiago shows this trait even more than Rudy though. Endurance is enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way. Rudy shows endurance when he is practising, and while he is attending school. Rudy does not give up his dream just because somebody told him he could not do it. Rudy realizes after being on the team for two years that some “that God made some people out to be football players”, but he keeps showing up to practice not letting it stop him.(Pizzo) Santiago endures in a similar way he shows his courage. Santiago stayed with the marlin for days even after he had hooked it. Santiago refuses to “admit he was suffering at all” , but like Rudy he refuses to let that stop him from trying the biggest fish he has ever seen.(Hemingway
