As a social species, humans are inclined to be kind to others, without reason; this could be for personal gain or it could be the satisfaction of having a positive impact on others, either way, most people would agree that their first instinct is to be kind to someone before knowing them. In both, The Fault in Our Stars and The Boy in Striped Pajamas tap into cruel and unforgiving situations and the resilience people's kindness have through them. Compassion progresses all of the relationships in both books and without any sympathetic connection the books wouldn't have gone forward. The book's themes

(Bruno 84) Even though Bruno had the option to leave and not speak to the boy, he reached out and spoke to him anyway. Their whole friendship started with Bruno being compassionate towards him and helping someone in an awful situation. They both personally grew from empathizing with each other and learned about the world around them; Bruno was able to make a friend once again, for the first time, after he moved to Berlin. Even though they are living completely different lives, they are compassionate towards each other and maintain a great friendship. The human compassion and sympathy they share allow them to give each other company, no matter each other's situation. "You're my best friend, Shmuel […]. My best friend for life" (Bruno 153). Bruno's dad is a Nazi soldier, which makes Bruno's friendship with the boy Shmuel very unlikely. Even though Bruno has been raised under a hateful message, his human reaction to someone in need is always compassion, which allows their friendship to flourish despite his upbringing. It is hard for someone to fully immerse themselves into a movie when they have to suspend so much belief in the story. Although Bruno and Shmuel are both only eight, it is hard to believe that they would be as clueless as to what is happening. Shmuel lived in the concentration camp and seemed to have no idea what was going on inside it. It is also hard to believe that Bruno, being as curious as he is, would not have tried eavesdropping on his father’s meetings. It is also convenient that none of the guards ever caught them sitting by the fence or that, Bruno’s mother did not notice that he has been disappearing every day. Another unbelievable aspect is how Bruno was able to easily enter into the camp. The camps were meant to be well guarded, and if it were that easy for a boy to enter, it would have been easy for anyone to leave.…

This means that he is still innocent and naïve and, as a result, there are many things that are implied rather than stated outright because Bruno cannot comprehend the true atrocities being committed. There are also simple mistakes he makes, such as thinking that Auschwitz is pronounced ‘Out-With’ and that the Fuehrer is pronounced ‘Fury’. This innocence and lack of understanding allows him to be a good and happy person even though he is so close to a concentration camp but also means he does nothing to help the situation and eventually is killed at a very young age. This also helped create a feeling of sympathy towards Bruno, but was taken too far at many stages when I just felt he was ignorant, and should have tried harder to understand his situation.…

He states throughout the film that he enjoys doing childish things such as playing ball, however it is not possible inside the concentration camp. When he is first introduced he is timid and scared, but as the film progresses he becomes more open and close to Bruno. He helps the audience realize that not all (if any) Jews are horrible people who deserve to be locked up, which is what Bruno has been told by his teacher and father. Shmuel tells Bruno a few times throughout the story that his dad is a good man, the same way that Bruno believes his dad is a good man and this helps Bruno realize that not all people who are assumed to be bad are actually…
