Similarities Between The Tell Tale Heart And The Raven
Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be one of the greatest mystery authors of all time. In stories such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and the poem The Raven, he has similar themes, point of views, and settings. Major life events such as the death of his lovers, inspired Poe to write amazing stories and poems that were filled with emotion. Poe's masterful use of rhythm and repetition created suspense in every story he wrote. In all of Poe's works he has very similar literary elements such as theme, setting, and point of views, but their are also many differences including, the characters, style, and conflict. In the two stories, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and the poem The Raven, all have very different conflicts. In the Tell- Tale Heart, the main conflict is, the narrator is driven to kill a man because of his evil eye. When the main character is referring to why she is murdering him, she said, “ I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” This conflict compared to Poe's other writings is very different. For example in The Cask of Amontillado, the main conflict is Montressor is planning to murder Fortunato because he offended his family. On page 1, Montressor says that he because he has been insulted, “ I must not only punish, but punish with impunity.” This conflict is very different from The Tell-Tale Heart because they are committing the murders for two very different reasons.. Along with this, both these conflicts are distinctly different from The Ravens conflict. In The Raven, the main conflict is the narrator can't get over the loss of his lover. On page 3, the man keeps telling the bird to,” clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels named Lenore.” Clearly, Poes three writings are also very different because they all have very different
