Skeletal diseases are bone diseases that refer to the medical conditions which affect the bone. What I know about skeletal diseases is that osteoporosis is the condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile. I also know that arthritis (a type of skeletal disease) can cause painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. I also know that leukemia is a type of skeletal system diseases. I want to find out why leukemia is a skeletal system disease, and how most skeletal system diseases can be cured. I also want to know the symptoms of skeletal system diseases, particularly leukemia. I am selecting leukemia as my skeletal disease because my neighbor was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010. My neighbor was only 6 when he was diagnosed with the disease. I was babysitting him one night, and he became incredibly sick. I called his mother who took him to the emergency room and the doctor said his white blood cells were malfunctioning and he had leukemia. He is now leukemia free after he took radiology treatments, and it was caught relatively early. But ever since my neighbor became diagnosed with the disease I always wanted to find out more about leukemia. Such as: why is it considered a skeletal disease? And what other treatments are used to help treat and try to cure leukemia? I found my sources by googling “Skeletal diseases” and “Leukemia”, and I also found information by watching the health channel. They had a documentary about people suffering from diseases, and leukemia was one of the diseases. Sources: http://www.livestrong.com/article/65887-list-skeletal-system-diseases/ , http://www.webmd.com/cancer/tc/leukemia-topic-overview , http://www.medicinenet.com/leukemia/page6.htm, and http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/leukemia/DS00351. I learned that in healthy people, white blood cells are infection fighters, but in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces malfunctioning white blood cells. I also learned that leukemia is immature white blood cells called blasts.

The skeletal system can suffer from a few diseases one of the most common ones is Osteoporosis another one is Osteogenesis imperfecta. Osteochondroma is the most common noncancerous bone tumor that develops in children and adolescents. This tumor forms on the surface of a bone near the growth plate, usually on the arm, leg, and hip bones. It is made up of mostly bone and cartilage which allow it to continue growing until your bones stop growing; for girls this usually happens around the age of 16, and for boys 18. Osteochondroma is also benign, meaning that it does not spread to other parts of the body and it is not a life threatening disease. Less than 1% of these tumors are cancerous. (Surgeons, 1995)…

Muscular dystrophy, MD, is a group of inherited muscle diseases that weaken the muscles that help the body move (Clark, 1995). There are nine major forms of MD. These are Myotonic, Duchenne, Becker, Limb-girdle, Facioscapulohumeral, Congenital, Oculopharyngeal, Distal, and Emery-Dreifuss (Wikipedia contributors, 2009). The type of disease is based on a few factors which are as follows: when in a person’s life MD appears, the degree to which the muscle is affected, how the disease came about, and the rate at which the symptom progresses. The cause of MD is linked to defects in certain genes and is determined by which gene is defective. This disease is inherited. In rare cases, muscular dystrophies aren’t inherited and occur because of a new gene abnormality or mutation (WebMD, 2005). The symptoms of the diseases vary depending on the type of MD. The main symptoms are progressive muscular wasting, poor balance, frequent falls, walking difficulty, waddling gait, calf pain, limited range of movement, respiratory difficulty, drooping eyelids (ptosis), gondal atrophy, scoliosis and finally the inability to walk (Wikipedia contributors, 2009). Symptoms are not always present for diagnosis. Often the disease is diagnosed based on the results of a muscle biopsy. Sometimes all that is needed for diagnosis is a DNA blood test. There is no cure for any of the muscular dystrophies (WebMD, 2005). However, there are forms of therapy that reduce the muscle degeneration caused by MD. The therapies also vary depending on the type of MD. Some of the forms of helpful therapy include the following: Physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotic intervention, speech therapy, and orthopedic instruments (Wikipedia contributors, 2009).…
