At first, the neighbors were mean to the Kranks because they did not like the idea of completely skipping Christmas. They gossiped around the town about the idea and were mad that the Kranks were not decorating their house at all.The regular people coming door to door selling various items were perplexed when the Kranks did not buy something, as everybody was expected to buy something. The neighbors tormented the Kranks for what they thought was a poor decision. Many of the neighbors came to their house to carol, but it was more to get under the Kranks’ skin. The city newspaper also had a story about the Kranks skipping Christmas. Luther suspected it was one of his neighbors who suggested the story. When Luther was trying to borrow one of his nice neighbor’s tree for the party, one of his neighbors called the police that there was a robbery taking place. When the policemen arrived, they handcuffed him immediately, and Luther suspected this was because he did not buy something from the policemen when he was coming door to door. Then, when the Kranks were scrambling to get the party ready, the neighbors came to help after Luther had an accident when trying to quickly decorate. The neighbors must have felt bad for their actions against the Kranks. All of the neighbors immediately rallied around the cause and started helping in some way. When the Kranks asked what needed to be done in the short time before Blair came home, it was also obvious that they sad were not called upon to do this earlier because the Kranks did not trust the neighborhood after the incidents. The couple also took notice that nobody in the crowd mentioned the cruise once, which meant that the neighbors must have been past it. The neighbors also adored Blair. The neighbors enjoyed seeing her grow up. When she was old enough, she babysat most of the kids on the street and
