INTRODUCTION

Humans are active during the day and inactive at night. Sleep is one of the major requirements of an individual’s growth. There are many reasons our bodies need sleep. Sleep is our bodies’ way of rejuvenating. It is the period in which we lower the energy levels expelled each day, our muscles and soft tissue are repaired and revitalized, and our mind is able to process memories and things we have learned for the day. It enables the body to recover from the exertions of the day. Sleep deprivation will indeed cause alterations in mood, physical well-being, and overall cognitive function. Increased periods of time without sleep with further these negative changes into hallucinations, poor mental clarity, and often provoked disease, or even death. The Mati National Comprehensive High School, First year section pupils start their afternoon class at one o’ clock in the afternoon. The pupils arrange their bags and prepare their notebooks, ballpens and other school materials as well their seats. As the class starts, the pupils tend to listen and participate in the class discussion. As the teacher structured them into groups for the activity some of them failed to participate for the reason that they fell asleep in their seats. Moreover, there are pupils who failed to take a quiz because of the same problem. The situation greatly affects the student’s performance as well as their behavior.
This research aims to study the factors why pupils sleep during their afternoon class as well as give possible solutions to the problem. It will give an idea on what would be the possible reasons why this problem occurred and the effects it will bring towards the student’s performance as well as teacher’s measures in addressing the problem.

ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION:

A problem of sleeping during afternoon class has been one of the problems that the teacher faces. It is one of the common situations that can be encountered in the field especially on lower level areas. This problem fails the student in participating from class discussion, from collaboration with other peers and negligence of responsibility as a student. In every manifestation of a behavior, there is/are always reason/s behind it. In every problem there is/are always argument why that kind of problem occurred.
These are: * Lack of Sleep. * Unmotivated. * No challenging and/or meaningful tasks given. * Poor teaching strategies of a teacher. * Tired from playing.

1. Lack of Sleep

We know that sleeping is very important in our body. It gives us strength in doing routinary as well as extra activities. The average duration of sleep should be around eight hours. We are aware that there is a minimum or amount of time to be considered in sleeping for us to have a good disposition or response towards the external factors that we will have in the environment. A lack of sleep will quickly cause irritability in which we become short-tempered towards our peers, the topic and teacher. Grogginess also occurs in which we have the difficulty in handling or dealing to the different forces of the learning environment and lastly the inability to make decisions or follow through with cognitive functions persist. It will cause hallucinations, dozing off during activities and even throughout the day.

2. Unmotivated to learn.
Motivation refers to the initiation, direction, intensity and persistence of human behavior (Santos). It drives the individual to do a task of his/her own pace with or without the intervention of external factors. The individual becomes unmotivated when; first he has a low self-esteem which means that individual has the feeling of demerit upon him, thinks that he cannot do the task or the essence of living with positivity and responding to life 's difficulties in a realistic way has paved away. In addition, one of reasons also why learners are not motivated to learn is because the subject does not interest them. If the learners don’t have the interest of learning that subject or topic then he/she does not show effort in completing a task and develop passivity towards the topic.

3. No challenging and/or meaningful tasks given.
Challenging tasks enable the individual to be persistent in aiming at a desired goal in a way that his or her curiosity has been addressed by compelling or getting her interest or attention in the class. Meaningful tasks enable the individual to learn on his own pace or learning by doing maybe through discovery or other means. The individual becomes active when the activities provided to him/her is motivating enough for him/her to participate in the class. We already know that challenging or meaningful tasks must be given to the students for them to have intensive learning. To have an intensive learning is not easy especially in lower level areas. It needs a lot of determination and courage in order to achieve that. There is a tendency that if the tasks given to individuals are not challenging or meaningful for them they will develop a sense of negligence. They will find it difficult to understand or process the information on what the teacher is trying to convey when they cannot relate themselves to the activities given. Instead of engaging themselves to the tasks the individual tend to pay less attention, dis-engage himself from the group and find other ways in addressing his/her needs by preoccupying himself of an activity that interest him/her or by sleeping. 4. Poor Teaching Strategies of the Teacher
Teacher played an important role in every learners learning. She has the capability to change things, mold minds and unwrap the gift inside of a learner. The teacher has a big impact towards learning. Every teacher has its own way of teaching learning to the students. She is entitled to use different approaches, strategies and techniques for her learners to learn. If the teacher uses only one strategy of teaching learning there is deprivation of knowledge on the part of the learners. We know that individual differences exist and it must be addressed by the teacher for the learners to generate ideas. From the event that teacher fails to address those needs of the learner, the individual now finds another way of addressing it. It may be in a way of spending his time on things that fascinates him or irrelevant activities that engrosses or excites him. As observed in the field, the learners tend to do things that are insignificant to the topic that the teacher discusses. They develop a sense of boredom for the reason that their needs have not been addressed. If learners with different multiple intelligences are not given attention, it will lead to disappointment as well as frustration. Moreover, the students will be sleepy because the teacher exerts little effort in motivating them. As observe in the field, learners tend to sleep because they were not given attention. They were overlooked and disregarded by the teacher which is not good because we know that they are the center of the educative process. 5. Lack of Classroom Management
Classroom is the second home of both teachers and students. It is an integral part of teaching. The classroom provides learners the environment to learn. The learner’s disposition and sitting arrangement greatly affects their response towards learning. In the situation wherein the learners are so close with each other have the tendency to manifest behavior which is unlikely to observe. If the classroom is conducive for learning they would not indulge themselves in sleeping. We know that afternoon sessions are the time where sleeping is very tempting and if the classroom is not well structured then learners indulge themselves in sleeping. 6. Tired from Playing
Elementary learners are play-minded in nature. After eating their lunch, they love to play games that they like most. We cannot deny the fact that playing games before afternoon class is very observable among pupils in the elementary. Even how much advice you gave to them they will still play. As the bell rings for the afternoon class, they went to their respective classrooms. As they enter the class they tend to listen first to the teacher into her discussion but later on they will feel sleepy because their energy were drained from playing. In order for them to regain the energy they have spent from playing they will spend their time from sleeping rather that listening or participating into the class discussions. 7. Not feeling well
Uneasiness of a child can cause abnormal disposition. It leads to a disruptive behavior of a student. The learner does not feel well because of a disturbing feeling like headache. Headaches in children are common and are usually not serious. Like adults, children can develop different types of headaches, including migraines or stress-related (tension) headaches. Children can also have chronic daily headaches).
In some cases, headaches in children are caused by an infection, high levels of stress or anxiety, or minor head trauma. That 's why it 's important to pay attention to your child 's headache symptoms and to consult a doctor if the headache worsens or occurs frequently. Headaches in children can usually be treated with over-the-counter pain medications and other lifestyle and home measures.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:

There are reasons why problems occurred and if it occurs then it is possible that there are solutions. In determining the solutions to a problem, a tool or means must be used to gather information in which it can be used as evidence or support in proposing the solutions. In collecting information there are ways or medium on how to gather the information. Searching printed sources for relevant information can be a way of collecting data for the said problem. Using the internet is one way also in searching for an idea in which that idea can be a great help in supporting the proposed solutions of the researchers. Another means of collecting data is to interview people in which certain questions are asked to an interviewee. This procedure can be an aid to the researchers in giving suggestions on how a certain problem be solved. Lastly, a tool can be used in searching for informations. The researchers will use the checklist in gathering informations on how the problem greatly affects the performance of the pupils. The tool was chose because it is easy to construct. The articulation of every indicator is based on the problems encountered. In marking or giving response to this tool the respondents will just put a check on the behavior manifested on the place of marking. There will be 29 respondents in which these respondents are based on the population of the said class.

Upon the implementation of the solutions, we found out that there are changes happen towards the pupil’s attitude of sleeping during afternoon class. The pupils are now active participant in the class. They tend to listen to the teacher’s discussion and collaboratively interacts with his/her peers. They do not engage their selves in sleeping because they are now motivated and interested to learn through the varied activities given by the teacher. Moreover, the learners can now share their ideas about the topic or lesson discuss because they can relate their own personal life to the discussions or examples given. The learners can now cite examples of the different life situations in which it helps them to acquired meaningful experiences. In terms of playing before the afternoon class, there is improvement in the sleeping behavior of the learners. They engage their selves into playing after the class has ended which then results to their active engagement to activities. After observing the learners conditions, the teacher can now determine as to whom among the learners are experiencing sickness or illness. Sleep deprivation is a factor that has also contributed to the high death total every year. While many don’t know it, sleep isn’t just mental, sleep is a factor that is also connected to our immune system. In the book Sleep Thieves, our immune system is proven to be more active while we are asleep and can be disrupted of its normal response pattern with loss of sleep (Coren 171). Also, an experiment conducted in Finland had about 10,778 adult subjects where they were followed for six years, being monitored for their health and sleep times. By the end of these six years, the scientist were able to found out that the poorer sleepers from the group was two and a half times more likely to die during that testing period (Coren 173). This is very significant due to the fact that when we are sick, we are asleep through most of the sickness because it allowed the immune system to become increasingly more active. With less sleep, it puts us at risk for disease or sickness because by losing hours of sleep would result in a decreased immunity to illnesses. In addition, a Doctor named Damien Leger was apart of the US national commision of sleep disorders. He created a report full of findings in 1988 where he obtained information of resulting incidents from sleep deprivation. For example, in Dr. Leger’s findings, there were 24,318 deaths and 2,474,430 disabilities that were caused by sleep deprivation (238). This is…

How important is it for students to get a good night’s sleep? Sleep is the activity that occupies the most of our spare time more than anything. Next to food, water, and shelter, sleep is one of the most important necessities for human survival. Even though humans need sleep to function properly and in the extreme cases live, most people choose to ignore their need for sleep. In an article called Sacrificing Sleep For Study Time Doesn’t Make The Grade, author Michael Breus states students who stay up late studying are more likely to have academic problems the next day. All around the world there are students filled with procrastination. This procrastination has an effect on all of their assignments, and their studying time. Students also have other academic, and other extracurricular activities that take up a lot of their time, so it gets hard finding time to study. Some students will stay up very late for many hours the night before an exam hoping to get an exceptional grade, but sometimes not getting enough sleep can have a bad effect on their grade. Michael Breus wrote this article to address the importance of sleep. Breus talks about the amount of sleep teens consume, and how much sleep is needed every night. Breus also writes about what happens when students don’t get enough sleep. What shocks me is that teachers don’t take into consideration about the students’ wellbeing! I mean, believe it or not, stated by the NHI, National heart, Blood and Lungs Institution, sleep deficiency cause people to be less productive at work AND school! Due to homework overdose, students have stayed up till midnight to finish off teachers’ requests. Only to set an alarm at 6 and have only 6 hours of sleep. Adolescents like us need at least 9 hours of sleep to perform well during the day. And did you guys know that sleep is divided into 5 stages that cycle through the night every 90 minutes. First, there is stage 1 and 2, which is called ‘light sleep’, while stages 3 and 4 are ‘deep sleep’. Though stage 5 is REM (also called Rapid Eye Movement), which is when you dream. Every noticed on the weekend, you always wake up rested and comfortable! You wake up naturally, and always happens during stages 1 or 2, light sleep. Though on school days, you have to set up an alarm and 95% of the time, we wake up in deep sleep, which makes us feel groggy and tempted to his the snooze button. Reference! Nature did not intend for us to wake up during deep sleep.…

Projects and assignments make school learners freak out; especially when there are tons of them. It is the best reason why students are most likely late when coming to school. Some school attendees are spending their whole night or even their whole night and morning finishing all the stuffs about their school. They can’t help it especially when they are running for top or if they do not want to get a low grade. The first reason why students end up being awake all the night is that they lack of time management. As a student, it is really hard to arrange your time and finish all the things that are written in your checklist list on time. The second reason is because teenagers are sluggish. Third and last reason is that students are being distracted by the technologies around them. It is really hard to accomplish things at a short period of time. We cannot blame the students for being late but we can do blame them for being lazy.…
