SSP is THE PLACE for my puppy! My GSD puppy loves, loves this place which is seen every time we are headed to daycare. Her non-stop cry of excitement in the car until we finally arrive where she pulls me through the doors to see and play with her extended family. She comes home tired at the end of her day of socialization and goes fast to sleep.

The staff is truly caring and attentive, so much so that one of the staff noticed an abrasion on my puppy's hind legs immediately upon my puppy's return to daycare. Although I was aware of the abrasion and the circumstances, the phone call from Janet of her concern was heartwarming. I have since boarded my puppy twice at SSP, with the most recent boarding being 10 nights. I felt confident

The entire framework of the National Education for Assistance Dog Services program is built on the concept of teamwork. Appropriate puppies are first identified and suggested for selection by breeders and workers in animal shelters. At around 8 weeks old the puppies arrive at the Laura J. Niles Early Learning Center and begin training for socialization. For approximately 90-95% of the puppies inmate trainers located in correctional facilities across New England are typically the next teammates that make a 12-18 month commitment to continue the training process and continue the socialization process ("NEADS, Dogs for deaf and disabled Americans," n.d.). After specific training for the dog is completed to match the needs of the future client…

They have different themed activities, clothes shopping in the activities room (where residents can go in and try on clothes and keep for free), and the staff are like family. When Halpern talks with the director of the program, he tells her that his goal is to make the place feel as much like home as he possibly can and thanks her for bringing the dog. I was also very impressed with Halpern’s description of the staff and how they interact with the residents. Everyone from the nurses to the maintenance people are involved and are always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed, and they try to make the place feel and look as homey as they could. I also saw the dignity in how these residents are treated, both from Halpern and especially from…

Service members engage with these specially bred, highly intelligent, low arousal puppies. In an 18-24 month service dog regimen the dog induces more than 90 commands while the veteran reestablishes into civilian life. When the training is finally complete, the service dog will then be placed with veterans with mobility-limiting injuries. Training begins about 3 weeks of age by staff and volunteers, helping to prepare these young dogs to become loving and loyal companions. These service dogs will then live the rest of their lives with and by their new owner. In order to fully train a service dog to be placed with a wounded warrior costs PPH 25,000$. As the dogs mature they will go through the final training step and evaluations. Some of the dogs will be placed with a veteran that has combat related injury while others will go on for “career changes” as therapy dogs, facility dogs to be used as demonstration, or be released to a loving…

There were two surveys. One dealt with disabled individuals and the other dealt with caretakers or people who knew the disabled individual. In both surveys, the majority of participants stated that there was only interaction with regular dogs and never therapy dogs. However, what needs to be taken into consideration is that the usage of service dogs is not widely known to the public. As a result, some participants may not completely understand what it means to have a service dog and the many different forms of this treatment there is. As a whole, the two surveys revealed that most of the disabled individuals interacted with a dog more than once a week, particularly 5-7 times. This may be largely due to them owning the dog—relating back to the lack of service dog interaction.…

“A dog is a man’s best friend”, is the expression people say when they find that during tough points in a person’s life an animal will always be there unconditionally to show comfort and support. The attachment that humans have with their pet is unquestionable, some people take their pets with them wherever they go, and even talk to their pets about what happened throughout the day or problems they are struggling with. Most animals are loyal to their owners and are always looking for attention, keeping their owners fit and exercised by going on walks or playing fetch or just going outside and getting fresh air. Therapists have thought of a way to bring that unconditional love, comfort, loyalty, and playfulness into the therapy room. Animal interactions during therapy sessions should be used because it increases overall health and happiness in the patient as well as secure a special bond between the client and the animal that will encourage and motivate them to come to therapy sessions.…

In a news release released to the public on October 10, 2013, it stated, “The RU Child Development Task Force conducted a survey of RU faculty and staff in November 2012 and found that 93 percent of the respondents said it was important to have a quality child care facility near campus (Osborne, 2013).” This is a great indication that students with children would loyally use the childcare program provided by Radford University. Also, the location being moved onto campus whether it is near the athletic building at the bridge or in Peters Hall where Education is the main focus would give parents a great sense of security. It should be in a building that is locked and can be accessed by a swipe card or security code given to the employees on duty,…

I have fostered many dogs, most have come from malicious breeders who were emptying cages to start new. The horrifying conditions these dogs were subject too are unacceptable. Breeders are people who keep animals in cages for most of their life to repopulate and breed certain species of dogs that are considered “superior” or “unattainably cute”. But the conditions many dogs are forced to live in are not worth the few adorable puppies that are adopted. This is why people need to rescue dogs from shelters, compared to buying them from breeders and puppy mills.…

My simple mantra “We have dogs from pet therapy for you; would you like to see them?” has always sparked life into sullen eyes. If only for a moment, I give these patients a chance to interact with that inherent love of dogs that I know all too well. More importantly, my “pack” has initiated meaningful conversations, connecting patients to the intimacy of genuine human interaction. It is so humbling to know the countless stories of the patients of Sharp Grossmont Hospital, from the kind lady who told me how she learned Vietnamese, to the nostalgic doctor who could not stop talking about his son’s love for baseball.…
