In the column, “University of Oklahoma Frat Boys and Girls Need to Own Up to Their Racist Behavior,” Grigsby calls out the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) members that were caught on camera reciting a racist chant against black people. Grigsby described it as soul-crushing verbal abuse, and she likened the singing of the chant on the party bus to Ku Klux Klan (KKK) gatherings that were held to plan horrific wrongdoings against blacks. Grigsby used pathos by playing on our morals and emotions to explain why what those frat boys was wrong; she used history to back up her claim, and she mentioned the KKK to evoke a feeling of disgust and outrage over what transpired on the SAE party bus. The use of pathos throughout Grigsby’s columns aided her in conveying the tone and theme she intended for the reader to have. Grigsby elicits your moral conscience and calls upon you to acknowledge that what occurred was…
Leyla Siraj Mrs. Coventon AP English Lang January 18, 2016 In the autobiographical narrative “Shame”, Gregory successfully utilizes several rhetorical strategies to invoke a feeling of empathy and understanding of the effects of trauma. Vivid imagery appeals to the readers emotions by re-creating his experience of his rough childhood that taught him the meaning of shame. In the first and second paragraph Dick shows the challenges of living in poverty, he goes out of his way to stay clean and decent looking.…
The article, “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch,” by Ann Hodgman was one of the weirdest and most confusing articles I have ever read. I realized the word bitch, in the title, was linked to the meaning female dog only after I was halfway through the article. It also took me half the article to understand that Hodgman was literally eating a variety of dog food. She sounds like quite an adventurous lady compared to myself. I would never think of trying dog food under any circumstances.…
Shameless is a show based in chicago which is kind of weird knowing how bad chicago is with all the crime that’s going on and the high murder rate but then again Lancaster hasn't been the safest of cities in the u.s either. Well shameless is about a dysfunctional family who struggles with life every single day, and every day there seems to be a new problem that occurs. Even though the main characters happen to have their own set of problems they always value family first and remain loyal to each other while I watch their family acting how they are it made me appreciate my family because we can be so many things but at least we're not crazy like the gallagher family. The main characters in the show consists of the gallagher family, Frank , Fiona , Lip , Ian , Carl , Debby , Liam and other supporting characters like Mickey and Karen. my personal favorite on the show is lip because he’s the cool brother who gets good grades and all the hot chicks he is sorta like me but I get bad grades well I did in high school. On a serious note this show made me feel every…
“ 1988, I lost my reputation and my dignity. I lost almost everything, and I almost lost my life.” Monica Lewinsky is a woman that was affected by public shaming. Public Shaming is a consequence that is served when a human makes a mistake. Often it is a crime that is legal and people still get persecuted. The three sources that support my claim is the scarlet letter, Monica Lewinsky, and Justine Sacco’s issue. These sources display negative effects of public shaming towards the people is unjust. Public shaming causes cruel punishments, depression and it should be left in the past.…

Scandals are seen in everyday life and throughout history. Scandal is something that brings about shame or disgrace to a community or individual. People document many scandals, and put them in newspapers, on television, the radio, and they even wrote books about it for others to enjoy. In today’s media we see celebrities “shunned” all the time whether it’s something as small as a bad wardrobe or bad habits they have to their crimes like one of the most notorious American gangsters known as Al Capone. As the scandals and shunning today are different today the media still does stories and writes articles of the person and tells the whole world of what they did and disgraces the person and shows them as a lesser individual.…

In light of the latest scandal involving a once well-respected Republican Congressman Mark Foley, and under-aged page, I felt it was relevant for this final paper to focus on scandals prompted by politicians. Scandals are one of the ‘hottest’ topics that the media thrive on, regardless of which decade they materialize in. For the same reasons as why infotainment (or just plain entertainment news) and celebrity gossip is so popular and never seems to cease, human beings with a natural curious behavior and a nose for dirty tittle-tattle feel that news on one’s private life is vital information, especially if it is not ethical or there is a dark secret involved. The media are aware that scandals sell, and as the cliché goes, “bad news is good news” and thus when a scandal erupts, extensive coverage is given to these juicy stories.…

Childhood is a multifaceted concept. Above all, most nobly, it is about innocence. The sexualisation of young people through a combination of razor sharp marketing, explicit lyrics, photo shoots and music videos together with a general coarsening of culture, must have an effect on the younger generation. Sex sells. And in a world where young girls who can barely walk are placed in high heels and playboy t-shirts, where supposed role models like Miley Cyrus, are regularly seen in minimal clothing, gyrating, twerking and suggestively licking inanimate objects, there are arguments being put forward by parents that these images in the media, art and photography are harmful to children. While I myself do not have children, I do plan on having them and have spent some time in loco parentis as a nanny; I feel this issue is an important one that needs addressing and something that as a society we need to discuss. Over the years we have seen an increase in teenage drinking, sexual activity and other behaviour that is less than innocent1 in the UK. In a world where children are more vulnerable than ever, they are also more aware of their surroundings, which begs the question whether the radical behaviour of the nations children is the fault of the media or the parents. A staggering “one in five children aged five to seven are accessing the internet without supervision from a parent” and shockingly less than half of those have some kind of filtering software to prevent them accessing inappropriate and adult material 2. Everyone from doctors to teachers, the police to art critics and photo lab workers are continuously on the look out, even subconsciously for anything even slightly of concern where children are involved. Looking back throughout the time of photography being an art form readily available to the masses, almost every family has the innocent naked…
The “big idea” I chose to write about is “Teen Pregnancy”. My thesis statement is “Teen Pregnancy is a growing problem here in the United States. School and parents need to educate their teen on the consequences before it’s too late”. My thesis statement will be effective because it grabs your attention, and explains what I will be talking about. The challenges I might face in supporting this thesis is getting the correct information, and finding the right amount of information I need to support it.…
fair to adults that pornography is being censored and that any means of getting any pornography…
I. Main idea (Topic sentence): Initially uncensored rap music that many listen to is getting to the younger generation .We all know that children are our future .What happens a majority of the time when a juvenile hears a new word ,they use the new word right? Eventually most children will be using profanity .The real question is, how will our society be in ten years from now. Additionally rap music should be censored because hearing cursing in the public is disturbing. Also the fact that rap music is played on medias such as radio and television, which are free to listen to by all audiences, and there are many parents that would not wish for their kids to hear foul language.…
Teachers tend to emphasize the importance of a thesis: having and knowing how to use one. A thesis is an essential part of one’s essay because it allows the readers to know what the essay is about. It may be a leading compass to one’s essay or a creation developed from one’s journey. A close thesis can cause restrictions in my writing since it limits me to only three details in the topic while an open thesis can cause improvement…
