Social Media In Australia Essay
For research project B, I intend to investigate the issue of Australian sleep patterns, cycles and necessities in high school, alongside the use of social media, and how it is influencing the balance of rest we require as young adults. Hence, my research question is, “To what extent is social media affecting Australian adolescent sleep requirements and how is this influencing their behaviour and/or cognitive development?” The reason for considering this line of research is because I am discovering home lives and families are becoming more and more reliant on mobile devices and technology, including my family. As well as myself, being a teenager affected by the addiction to mobile technology and suffering from sleep deficiency and have an inclination …show more content…
From conducting this research, I am aiming to gain greater knowledge on the overuse of social media and sleep deprivation caused by this. The knowledge I want to gain includes: how social media links to depression, anxiety and low self-esteem, how lack of sleep causes disturbing experiences and how stress, sleep, and social media each influence each other.

Reliable archival sources such as the Australian Sleep Foundation website, ABC Health & Wellbeing website and Health Direct Au Magazine will be explored and critically analysed to help answer each part of my research question. For example, the Health Direct Au website will help me discover more about the causes and factors of mental health issues in adolescents. I will then link this back to social media and answer the first part of my question on how it affects sleeping requirements.

I will also source reliable and relative research in the form of surveying students studying middle and senior school at Victor Harbor High School. This will provide me with a deep insight into how social media is taking shape of young lives, how lack of sleep is affecting students, school, and home, and how it can possibly be

The authors begin the article with a National tragedy that everyone has at least heard about, the Exxon Valdez Disaster. Where the oil tankers spilled millions of gallons of crude oil and it was said to be due to the ship master 's alcohol consumption. In fact, the cause of the crude oil spill was from the third mate, whom was extremely slept deprived. When in fact the in it’s final report that National Transportation Safety Board found that sleep deprivation and sleep debt were the cause of the accident (Dement and Vaughn, 498). When the report from The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research finally was finished, it identified that sleep deprivation was the “direct cause” of the Exxon Valdez oil spill (Dement and Vaughn, 498.) Although there is an abundance of knowledge about sleep, Dement and Vaughn stated that there is "none is more important than the topic of sleep debt"(498). Sleep debt to this day still remains a concealed and misunderstood on how big of a problem it is in society today.…

The research question that I will be investigating is: how do the demands of the college workload affect the sleeping habits of college students? I chose this topic because I feel like it has a direct correlation to my personal experiences, as well as those of my fellow classmates. I often feel as if the demands from my college workload directly affect my ability to get an appropriate amount of sleep, and so I want to research the topic to see if other students share the same experience. I believe that when I have more work that needs to be completed, I have less of an opportunity to sleep during the night. This sentiment has been echoed by many of my classmates and friends, therefore I think that this is a common situation amongst college students. In this paper, I am going to refer to a similar study, as well as propose the most appropriate method to conduct this study, which is through survey. In addition, I will be comparing and contrasting the benefits and the drawbacks of this methodology, along with this study’s relevance to previously existing studies on this topic.…

In “Today’s Exhausted Superkids,” Frank Bruni discusses how sleep is a key factor in a child’s growth and development. However, many teenagers are too stressed to get the proper amount of sleep each night. Bruni mentioned this has only been an issue for the most recent generations. He says the problem used to be oversleeping and being late to class, but now the situation is quite the opposite. Teenagers these days are pushed to have the best grades, participate in a sport, have a job, and get into the best college. This is just too much for most teens, and they are sacrificing sleep to accomplish it all. According to Bruni, the National Sleep Foundation recommends eight to ten hours of sleep, while more than half of American teenagers get seven…

However, researchers, such as Wahlstrom (2002), criticized the viewpoint that grades are the sole source of benefit from increased adolescent sleep, calling the myopic focus “shortsighted” (p.18). In point of fact, a plethora of researchers have investigated the myriad of benefits derived from obtaining optimal sleep, creating a vast amount of literature on the topic (see Chapter 2).…

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sixty percent of Americans have sleep deprivation, an outcome of today’s advanced technology. Improvements of the technology and realization of the imaginations offer people more choices to expend their limited amount of time: for example, cell phones, which are among the greatest inventions in the twenty-first century, let people listen to music, take pictures, and even watch TV shows. Because of those innumerable entertainment options, they leave their own health as the last concern, meaning that sleep is in their least priority, without knowing how much a lack of sleep influences their life. The play Macbeth, a tragedy about the rise and fall of the protagonist, Macbeth, reveals the significance…

The majority of students will participate in extracurricular activities after school or hang out with their friends, as most teenagers do. They will already be dismissed at around five o’clock, and, after their post-school activities, they will have less time to finish their homework but also get a good amount of sleep. Being a senior in a public school, I can easily say that the majority of my friends have a Facebook, and spend their time on Facebook while doing their homework. Facebook only serves as a distraction. Imagine yourself in a class, where you sat next to your best friends. Do you think you’d get anything done or get as much done as you would sit next to someone you don’t talk to? As a student, I know every student that would say yes, would be lying. It takes almost twice as long to finish an assignment when on Facebook, compared to being off of it. With the technology we have in today’s society, up to two more hours in the classroom is unhealthy for any student. On average, they will get less time to sleep. My fellow students, and even teachers, can easily differentiate the students that did get enough sleep the night before form the ones that didn’t based on their participation in the…

According to Wolfson and Carskadon's 1998 study, “26 percent of high school students routinely sleep less than 6.5 hours on school nights, and only 15 percent sleep 8.5 hours or more” (Carpenter). In result to that, many adolescents try to sleep longer on weekends to “catch up” on their sleep hoping it will contribute to the tiredness they will feel the following Monday morning. There are many statistics that show how dramatic the effects of not getting enough sleep are on a teenager’s…

Many negative consequences result from the ongoing sleep deprivation. Students find it hard to wake up in the morning, not necessarily because they are lazy, but because their body clock is mismatched with the demands of life, and because irregular sleep interferes with their sleep cycle; resulting in increased difficulties falling asleep at night and waking up in the…

    Sleep Deprivation

Sleep is one of the most fundamental components of a healthy existence. The phenomenon of sleep deprivation, resulting either from lifestyle choices or the undertreatment of sleep related illnesses, could be a factor for a multitude of health disorders prevalent in today’s society (Nature, 2005). It is suggested that people of industrialized countries obtain about 20% less sleep today than they did a century ago. Sleep deprivation has been linked to Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and has also been found to significantly increase the chance of a motor-vehicle accident (Wilson, 2005). In order to address the problem of sleep deprivation, it is imperative that the motivation behind sleep and sleep deprivation is understood. This essay will look at sleep and sleep deprivation through five different perspectives of motivation: evolutionary, psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive, and hierarchy of needs. This essay will then argue that by viewing sleep and sleep deprivation from a multitude of perspectives, a holistic understanding of the phenomena might be achieve.…

“A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report linked lack of sleep to health risks--being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, using drugs--as well as failing classes” (“4 Good Snooze”). Another problem teens are experiencing from lack of sleep is a change in hormones, which can cause the teens to crave more unhealthy foods, become depressed, and possibly even develop diabetes (Noland). The excessive sleepiness caused by early school start times can also have a negative effect on cognitive function (Millman). Based on this evidence, we can conclude that if school starts later, the students will get more sleep, causing a decrease in physical and mental health…

Sleep deprivation causes physical and psychological problems in teenagers. Teenagers need an average of eight to nine hours of sleep every night. If those hours are reduced then it causes health issues. These issues can range from suicidal tendencies to obesity. It has been proven “Insufficient sleep in teens is associated with obesity, migraines, and immune system disruption”. Since teenagers are not getting enough sleep, these dangerous effects occur. A solution to eliminating these effects is starting school time later. Homework, work, and social events…

“Well there is a new study that says teenage cell phone use at bedtime is linked to insomnia and poor school performance.” (Source 3) Insomnia is the inability to sleep. Teenagers should be sleeping at least 8 hours so their body won’t be exhausted. In the study, 62 percent of the kids say they use their smartphones after bedtime. 57 percent say they text and tweet messages while in bed, and 21 percent said they wake up if a text comes in. The doctor says parents should emphasize the importance of sleep to their kids, and school districts may need to check the homework load they’re putting on kids, maybe ease up a bit, if that’s what's keeping them up late in the first…
