How come parents never notice that some teens use their phone in the night while they are sleeping? Parents do not know that their child is using their phone in the night while they are sleeping because either the child pretends to sleep or they turn off their phone when they hear their parent’s footsteps coming toward their room. “Some teenagers have bad grades, having a difficult time concentrating and falling asleep, hours of night-time use, frequent complaints of being tired, school lateness or absences, and withdraw from all activities such as sports practices, friends, social engagement and music lessons.” (Source 1) I believe that teens who spend significant amounts of time can suffer depression, …show more content…
anxiety, feelings of loneliness, and social isolation. Teenagers can also fall victim to dangers such as sexual predators. Teens might be online because they are already depressed, anxious, and lonely. When parents go to sleep, they have no idea what they are doing online or otherwise between the hours of 11pm and 2 am.
It is normal for parents to worry that their kids are spending too much time online. Certainly, it’s important that they are still maintaining in-person friendships, meeting commitments, getting exercise and exploring the physical world. Believe it or not, all of that multitasking online can actually help teens learn to type quickly. “Chatting online with others helps young people build social skills and they also learn how to cope with people who have different points of view.” (Source 2) Teens making new friends is awesome instead of being online using social media the whole day 24/7. Mostly kids and teenagers that like to use their phone or social media should be going out and not being addicted to the internet or social media. Teens may run out of time to play a game or finish up their research for a homework assignment and it’s true because I’ve seen a lot of teens “trying” to do their homework, which another words, they are on social media and that is why they can no finish their homework.
Parents tell their kids to turn off their cell phones before they go to bed to be able to rest.
“Well there is a new study that says teenage cell phone use at bedtime is linked to insomnia and poor school performance.” (Source 3) Insomnia is the inability to sleep. Teenagers should be sleeping at least 8 hours so their body won’t be exhausted. In the study, 62 percent of the kids say they use their smartphones after bedtime. 57 percent say they text and tweet messages while in bed, and 21 percent said they wake up if a text comes in. The doctor says parents should emphasize the importance of sleep to their kids, and school districts may need to check the homework load they’re putting on kids, maybe ease up a bit, if that’s what's keeping them up late in the first
place.
Most teens think it’s speechless for using their phones overnight even though some of those teens use their phones overnight. Furthermore, most teens think that they will never get caught by their parents for using their phones while their parents are sleeping, but some parents actually do check up on their kids to make sure that they are sleeping and not using any electronics. We need sleep to learn, plain and simple. Sleep allows the brain to consolidate information that’s been received and encoded. Learning actually takes place while we sleep. When sleep is disturbed the ability to learn is reduced. Sleep deprivation leads to many daytime problems for teenagers, including headaches, impaired concentration, and teens that use their phones overnight get tired for the next day, when they need to be more energetic.
