Social Work Personal Statement
As a young girl I never dreamed of working in a hospital, dentist office or even being behind a desk as an accountant. Since I could remember my dream job was to become a teacher and to teach younger kids since I was so drawn to them. Never had I imagined becoming something other than a teacher, until I realized I wasn’t drawn to kids to teach them but rather to help them with any and all situations in life. After realizing that I wanted to become a social worker I started thinking about what kind I wanted to be and who I wanted to work with. I automatically knew that I wanted to be a child and family social worker, because of my intense connection with younger children. Addams was not a social worker but did work in the community around her like; being a peace activist and founding the settlement house. “She also established a nursery, dispensary, kindergarten, playground, gymnasium, and cooperative housing for young working women “, as stated by Elizabeth H. Pleck. To add to her accomplishment with fellow Hull-House residents they work together to sponsor legislation to abolish child labour, establish juvenile courts, limit the hours of working women, and etc. Searching about your career can lead you to some interesting things that you never would have known if you didn’t look. The current market of social work salary is approximately fifty-thousand dollars a year. One of the reasons why the salary is low compared to other sociology types of jobs is because there is only three-hundred thousand employers in the field of social work. To become a social worker you need to have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, and other related fields.
