to people's lives, with social work I believe I can do this in a caring and supportive way. I have gained some insight into child protection while working at a child contact centre. Throughout my voluntary work as a Prime Time Child Contact Centre assistant coordinator, I was involved in many social work scenarios for example assessing parents and helping them to rebuild physical and emotional relationships with their children, also staying with parents during crisis situations at the centre and doing an initial assessment of family's needs so that you can identify and plan the support needed to address issues and prevent any problems from escalating.
This direct role has given me exposure to social work. I truly enjoy working with my colleagues in the children contact centre, they have helped me to develop excellent communication skills, appreciate people as individuals and to be patient and understanding. Working in a customer service environment demands good listening skills and an ability to be able to deal with pressure and to deal with people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. I have learnt to be able to answer enquiries efficiently and to share my knowledge and advice. Studying a unit in psychology really interested me and made me want to strive to take my interest out of the classroom and into the world of work. My Access to HE in Nursing has broadened my knowledge of the subjects that will help me in a Social Work
Degree. Studying psychology as one of my main units indicated the importance of psychology in Social work. How psychology relates to everything we do in our daily activities and why we have certain behaviours. During my spare time I enjoy doing voluntary work at the child contact centre and also taking part in regular exercise classes such as yoga lessons, spin classes and swimming. Taking my 1-year daughter out on adventurous trips such as the zoo and aquarium is something we do together at least once a month which we both really enjoy. Having a child has taught me how to communicate very well with young children and understand their needs. After university, I plan to complete my ASYE in child protection and continue to gain experience in social work. I feel that university would be a great way for me to boost my experience in Social Work, I’m a very compassionate person who always has peoples best interest in heart. I see myself as a competitive individual who enjoys a challenge and learning new things. Throughout my academic experiences so far I have learnt so much about myself and I feel prepared and confident enough to enrol onto a Social Work degree.
