Social Work Personal Statement Essay
I am applying for a place to study social work because I have always wanted to be able to make a difference to people's lives. With social work I believe I can do this in a caring and supportive way. I accomplished an Access course to Nursing and Social Health at college of North London went on to complete my foundation year in Nursing and Social Work at London South bank university. I have since worked as a maternity nanny working with different families to help them settle in with their new arrivals, this has given me a broad understanding of a family unit and any issues that are raised after child birth such as postnatal depression and importance of having relatives around such as grandparents. These personal experiences instilled in me further the desire to become a social worker. …show more content…
I enjoy working with children and families which I would gladly do if I qualify as a social worker. Hence this gave me an opportunity to have interest into therapeutic interventions. My course also taught me about different therapies available such as person-centred therapies, cognitive behavioural therapies and how important counselling skills can be within the social work profession.

During my placements at Great Ormond Hospital I worked with children suffering from chronic illness coming from different walks of life and dealing with families who had to care after these children on a daily basis. I found the subject nature vs. nurture very interesting as I came across a man called Baron Cohen and his research into Developmental Learning and Autism in

Leadership is a term that is heavily used in today’s society and is often times overlooked for its true meaning. In our text it is defined as “the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals” (Robbins, 01/2012, p. 368). After serving in the Marine Corps for five years I have seen many different leadership styles; some which were effective, and others that were not. The leader that had the most influence on me while serving was a Marine by the name of Major Marcus Mainz. He served as the Operations Officer for my Battalion while deployed to Iraq.…

Even though they are all part of the U.S. government, they all have separate powers and responsibilities. For example, the legislative branch is able to make a law, while the executive branch enforces that law. All of the branches are made up of many different people with their own rolls in the branch.…

My mother aged with some health issues. She had hypertension and very high cholesterol, and was placed on some medication. Years after she started taking the medication my three brothers and I travelled overseas and my mother stopped taking her medicines. Her blood pressure became extremely high that the doctors could not bring it down to normal, she ultimately had a stroke and died within a week. This led to personal difficulties for our family, but with the support of a clinical social worker, we had the ability, strength, and acceptance of the negative situation. The experience we had with the social worker molded me into having an interest in the profession, to be able to assist the people that needs outside help when it comes to some problems. As well as benefiting from the academic aspects of the course, I believe that the work placement has been hugely significant in my personal and professional development. During the placement learning opportunity I was based with a social worker in a small unit attached to a hospital. The unit specialises in palliative care services to patients and carers who are affected by life threatening illnesses. I was also fortunate to have the opportunity to liaise with many other agencies that were in some way related to the organisation.…

Ever since I was in fourth grade, I have enjoyed helping kids and watching them learn new things and grow. The best feeling is helping children with something and watching their faces light up as they discover what they can do all by themselves. While in fourth and fifth grade, I was a part of the buddy program at my school which entailed spending every lunch in the special education classroom at my elementary school. A trait I possess is being sequential and that is useful for the career I want because it will help me with staying organized and grading papers. I am an analyzer, I like to know what is going on around me and love to know how things work. This is a trait that comes in handy with being an elementary school teacher.…

I have been studying for the last couple of year, counselling safeguarding courses and voluntary work. I am hoping this will all help me with becoming a social worker in the future. I have found the role of volunteering with domestic abuse very interesting and challenging. I feel it is very important to focus on time with the children and draw learning from them. I wanted to begin the foundation degree to adapt my current practice to ensure I am confident in my job role and to make sure the children in our setting get the most out of their experience. One of the strengths I feel I bring to my job is that I feel everything should be done with a purpose. Doing things with no reason feels a waste of time and if we only do things that contribute to making our practice stronger we will become better practitioners.…

Deciding what populations and types of clients with whom I want to work with, in the field of social work, is one of the most important decisions ever, regarding my career. From as early as childhood, I have always known that I want to work with children in whatever career path I embarked on. After deciding education and teaching was not the career I wanted to choose as my forever career, I always envisioned myself being a child and family social worker. I feel so comfortable with this population because I have always felt a need to want to improve the quality of life for families and children. I did not have the best childhood-due to experiencing homelessness, addictions and having to mature at an early age, but I knew the warm feeling that I received when my family was together and thriving was the best. According to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppresses, and living in poverty” (NASW 2010). Children are one of the most vulnerable and helpless beings in the world, so they need someone to fight for them. This is the population is where I feel I can help to enhance the social functioning of children and families the most.…

Critique of an Author: Anton Chekhov As a man who had the capability to juggle two careers, medicine and writing, there is little doubt that Anton Chekov is anything less than an intelligent man. Although the author is known to sketch his characters with morality and mindfulness behind them, he often chooses to portray human weakness, faults, and ignorance in them as well. Within the short story, The Lady with the Dog, Chekov uses adultery to show temptation of mankind as well as two people who are able to find what they are looking for within each other as a result of the affair. It is through literary elements such as setting, tone, and imagery that Chekov’s strengths as a writer are portrayed allowing readers to recognize the strengths within…
