Social Work Personal Statement
Social work is a deep passion for me. I am inspired to pursue a career in the social work field because I believe in genuinely helping people to the best of my ability and not only when it is convenient. Diversity is healthy for the soul in all shapes, forms, and at all stages of life. Diversity is essential in life and promotes a healthy environment for individuals to be comfortable in any setting. Social justice is one of the most important issues across the world. Everyone should be entitled to equal and efficient economic, political, and social rights. Unfortunately in 2015 this is not the case but it should be and that is one of the goals I would love to help accomplish with social work. Social justice is long overdue, especially for underrepresented populations, primarily our youth. Justice is when everyone is given a fair start and opportunity to achieve their full potential. Adolescents and children are our future and our most impressionable populations and we must make sure their basic needs are met and try our best to let them tap into their abilities by exposing them to diversity and making social justice

The challenges of being a social worker include how “social work involves helping others and getting involved with people in such a close way can sometimes put you in harm. The risk is real and social workers need to be cautious” (“5 Pros”). No matter what career a person chooses, there will always be risks. Social work comes with big risks. Most people go to or are assigned to a social worker because they have a problem in their lives that they need help solving. That can sometimes mean they did something dangerous and you may be in harm's way. Another negative thing about being a social worker is that it “might be labeled by some to be rewarding, but it can also be emotionally draining” (“5 Pros”). A social worker spends most of their day listening to the problems in the lives of their clients, and giving advice to their clients. That can be very emotionally draining because a certain amount of patience and listening skills are required to get through the day. Some days a social worker may have a more difficult client, and they put more effort and time into that one client which can be very…

There are many reasons why I chose a profession in the social work field. Some of the reasons why I chose to work in this area stem from my childhood experiences. As a child, I was pretty much on my own, my parents were pretty much absent and I had to take care of myself and sometimes them, I also took care of my siblings. The only teacher I had to encourage me was my 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Mr. Schaal, (he was killed in a car wreck after I started high school) with no guidance, I began to get into trouble. I had to grow up fast, so I always was the “motherly” figure among my group of friends (although I did let them talking me into things).…
