Role of social workers in school’s social policy
The chapter, policy development and the school social worker, offers an overview of specific components of policy practice in relation to social work done at the school, including a case example of the Millervillle School District. From the chapter, it is evident that social workers plays vital role in shaping the behaviors and addressing the social needs of students. However, the role played by social workers in their attempt to shape the behavior of students is all guided by school’s policy. The micro level policy practice comprise of small scale, direct practice policy while the mezzo level policy practice is expressed within the administrative level. Lastly, macro level policy practice is the practice at the local, state or federal level and has a very important impact on the social works service delivery. On the same note, the practice of school social workers usually differ across varied levels of practice with regards to different policies. The case of Millerville School District offers an exemplify multilevel policy practice within school’s social work. The MSD’s student handbook, for instance has a uniform policy which requires all students to put on their uniforms at all time while in school. The policy also outlines all the necessary steps that should be taken to discipline students who fail to comply with the uniform policy. As per the policy of the school, the first offence and second offence results into a meeting with the parents and the principals respectively while the third offence result into in school suspension while the fourth offence will automatically result into a suspension in which the student will be out of school for two days. In this case, Jaclyn, who is the school social worker, has to help her clients, the students, to develop positive behaviors so that they do not violate the
