Social Work Reflective Essay
The career of a social worker is a distinct and varied profession that aims to enhance events and lifestyles of susceptible populations. Being a social worker is not an easy task; however, it is a gratifying and rewarding career. Social workers take responsibility of helping families, and various groups of people to deal with problems they are having in their lives. In order to become a successful social worker, one would need to work on strategies such as: how to achieve one’s goals, how to collaborate with others effectively, learning about diversity, intellectual responsibility, critical thinking, effective communication in professionalism and how practicum placements can help an individual succeed. (Study. Com, what is critical thinking). However, while doing so, I must keep other perspectives and points of view in mind, especially as a social worker dealing with children. The situation must be analyzed and assessed for its accuracy, relevance, clarity, breadth, depth, and rationality. I must be able to view the situation from different mindsets in order to recognize the different motives that may be the cause of the situation. This will allow me several approaches on the situation. Not only that, but a social worker must also be capable of thinking critically in order to encourage children to do the same, so that their creativity and innovativeness can be nourished instead of denounced. This will allow the social worker to approach situations in the workplace in the best way possible. An example of this would be, if a child or parent were harming themselves or causing harm to others, the social worker must be able to realize that the authorities should be involved immediately before further harm can be done. The practicum can help me in various areas to enhance my skills and, thereafter, give me opportunities to apply my knowledge into practice. It will allow me to be more organized about how and when to apply my knowledge and understanding in situations in and outside the workplace. The practicum can also help me in evaluating myself and expanding my knowledge. It can be used as a means of effective communication in practice. It can also prepare me to respect and value diversity within clients. It causes clients to be punctual and understand the importance of the responsibility at the social worker’s practicum placement. According to Lombard, D 2011, it is necessary that every social worker follows the client’s code of ethics and completes assignments within due time. The practicum also helps individuals remain organized and understand the need of their service.
