II. The fact of the matter is that our society could not travel to work, we could not work, and we could not communicate because we are too dependent on technology to take care of us.
III. Today you will learn three ways why society is too dependent on technology; the first way is our modern transportation, the second way is the technology in our workplace, and the third way is the way society communicates.
Body
I. The first way why society is too dependent on technology is our modern transportation.
A. Nothing …show more content…
is more important in the United States than modern transportation. Without modern transportation, trade would not be possible and would essentially bring down all economic life.
1. All trade of wealth involves modern transportation especially when it is dealing with the movement of goods.
2.
The fact of that matter is that trade is impossible without modern transportation, and complex trade is impossible without modern mechanized transportation.
B. Modern transportation also provides people with mobility and access to employment, community resources, medical care, and recreational opportunities in communities across America.
1. Take for example the percentage of people who own a car, In an article titled Does Everyone in America Own a Car?, Robin Chase, founder and former CEO of Zipcar, stated in 2012 that 95 percent of all American households own a car, and 85 percent of Americans get to work by car.
2. Not only does modern transportation affect the United States, it also affects people across the whole world. Take for example Australians.
(Show image 1: Here is a statistic posted by ABC, from February 2 2014 that shows the top 5 ways Australians get to work, with cars making up 6.5 million, trains making up 400 thousand, buses making up 300 thousand and trucks making up 100 thousand.)
II. The second way why society is too dependent on technology is the technology in our workplace.
A. The internet has infiltrated in every cranny of American workplaces, and digital technology has transformed vast numbers of American
Jobs.
1. According to an article titled Technology’s impact on workers, Kristen Purcell and Lee Rainie, both directors of internet, science and technology research as Pew Research Center, which is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about issues, stated that in “the most recent survey data from Pew Research in late 2013 shows that 94% of jobholders are internet users and 46% percent of these users feel more productive when using the internet, email and cell phones at work.”
B. Technology in the workplace creates the problem of people relying on it to do their job.
1. Businesses need technology to thrive. Without technology there could not be a large scale production of goods. Many industries, such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft would not have grown. Business could not create new opportunities for people and many people would be without work.
(Show Image 2: Here is a panel survey from the PEW Research Center from 2014, it is a survey that shows the percentage of working internet users who think each tool is “very important” to doing their job.)
III. The third way why society is too dependent on technology is the way society communicates.
A. With Technology constantly changing, we face changes in personal communication as well.
1. Emails, texting, Facebook and Twitter are a few examples of ways technology and social media has diminished verbal communication. According to the article Communication Changes with Technology published on December 2 2014 by BYU, Hayley Eastman, a lifestyle reporter for the university, stated that “about 4.1 billion text messages are sent per day in the United States alone.”
(Show Image 3: Here is a line graph by Pew Research Center from April 17- May 19 2013, showing the percentage of American adults who own a cell phone from Nov 2004 to May 2013).
2. It is no secret that time spent on new technology and social media sites are increasing immensely, which creates less time for real life interactions. Likewise, there is no doubt that as these numbers continue to rise, face to face and verbal communication will continue to decrease and possibly even become a mere trend of the past.
Conclusion
I. Today I have shared three ways why society is too dependent on technology; the first way is our modern transportation, the second way is the technology in our workforce, and the third way is the way society communicates.
II. Technology has improved society’s quality of life, but could society function without it? Due to the fact that technology is a huge contributor to the wellbeing of human kind, it comes to my concern and many other that as it advances it will slowly consume the human aspect of our lives and make society overly dependent on it.
