and have a gang fight once a while.”
The socioeconomic differences between the Socs and the Greasers is the main cause of conflict between them which develops the plot. Since the Socs are known to jump the Greasers, this usually leads to a rumble, or a fight or it creates a dangerous situation for both parties. For example, when Ponyboy and Johnny were jumped by some drunk Socs in chapter 4, the circumstances lead to Johnny murdering one of the Socs. This was due to the scenario in which one of the Socs were trying to drown Ponyboy and out of self defense, Johnny killed one of the Socs, whom his name was Bob. From here on out, this is what causes Johnny and Ponyboy to run away from the law and this principal event influences the events which come after. The example shows that due to the socioeconomic differences between the Socs and Greasers, it created a base for problems that would emerge shortly after.
The socioeconomic differences which is portrayed in The Outsiders also plays a significant role in the characterization of these two groups.
Due to the social status differences between the Socs and the Greasers, they believe that virtually they are divergent from each other. However, this is not the case as it can be seen that both groups do have similar interests and also have individuals who understand their socioeconomic differences. In chapter 2 of The Outsiders, Ponyboy, Johnny, and Two-Bit-who are Greasers- meets Cherry and Marcia who are Socs. They talk with each other and soon after they can see that they have much alike. For example, when Ponyboy was talking to Cherry, they both realize that they have some common interests such as Elvis Presley and watching sunsets. They also come to realize that they have different sets of values which is the reason that separates them. Marcia and Two-Bit also are described to have the same sense of humor. As the story continues, Ponyboy learns that the Socs and Greasers are actually complementary to each other and that they have their own hardships. With the presence of the socioeconomic differences, individuals such as Ponyboy(a Greaser) and Cherry(a Socs) are able to communicate better and show a more kind and sensitive side of
them.
The socioeconomic differences is also a main theme that is depicted throughout The Outsiders.
