Sarah who is 36 years old just finalised a divorce proceeding with her husband Syahrul. The divorce was due to her husband being physically and verbally abusive to her and the children. Sarah has full custody of her 2 sons Irfan and Shaqiq who are 8 and 7 years old respectively. She also has a daughter Shirin who is 14 years old from her previous marriage living with her at present. However she shows signs of distress due to the divorce and losing the main financial support which is her husband Syahrul. At present, she is unemployed and have to pay monthly installment for the house, support her children and clear the outstanding arrears. Although her children and her had undergone physical and verbal abuse from her ex-husband, Sarah is not as worried of her family’s safety because her husband has left the country. She finds emotional support in her children. Stage Two is to make psychological contact and establish rapport. According to Roberts (2009), the two essential skills to establish working relationship is understanding and support. I will have to give assurance that Sarah and her children is my responsibility and importance. Once the trust and understanding is built from the client intervention process is smoother.
Stage Three is to examine and define the dimensions of the problem by asking open-ended questions. This allows Sarah to explain more of the problem and events that lead up to her current situation. It is important and stage two and three to find out her available resources or strengths or coping mechanism by applying the Solution-Focused Theory in asking questions. Besides Sarah’s financial difficulties, she had faced abuse from her ex-husband. She related, it was difficult for her to see him abusing her children which affected their emotional and mental status. I enquired further on how she coped with it, she would not engage in much conversation with her husband when he is in that state and tells him she apologises for her shortcomings in order to suppress her husband’s anger. However, there are occasions when he would be furious with his children out of the blue. In those situation, Sarah recalled taking her children out of the house to her cousin’s house and staying there overnight. Sarah has positive coping strategies such as relationship with her cousin although the relationship with her two elder brothers is not as close. This could be an alternative avenue to
