Sop's Civil Engineering
SAMPLE-1 “STATEMENT OF PURPOSE” TO ACCOMPANY GRADUATE APPLICATION Statement of Purpose Name: First Last January 4, 2010 Civil Engineering (Geotechnical specialty)

I am a senior at the University of Missouri. I am studying Civil and Environmental Engineering, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering. I expect to graduate this upcoming May, 2010, with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, with honors from both the College of Engineering and the College of Arts & Sciences. I am proud to say that I am among the very best in my class. During my undergraduate career, I have gained knowledge and experience in the classroom, in the laboratory, and in practice. I wish next to enter XYZ University’s graduate program in Civil Engineering (Structural specialty). Structural engineering is the intersection of the fields I find most interesting, exciting, and intellectually and practically satisfying, namely Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics. I have worked diligently these past four years to increase my understanding and mastery of these subjects, and I have greatly enjoyed the process. I wish to study Structural engineering at XYZ University so I can further investigate and contribute to the understanding of various physical phenomena encountered in Civil Engineering, which will lead to more accurate assessment and use of the engineering characteristics and potentials of materials, sites, and processes. My specific interests include Continuum Mechanics, Computational Mechanics, Multiscale Modeling, and Geomechanics. Over the summer breaks of 2007 and 2008, as well as the winter break between them, I worked as an engineering intern at Engineering Design Source (EDSI), Inc., which is a Civil Engineering design and consulting firm in St. Louis, Missouri. During my time at EDSI, I performed various tasks, including computer aided design with AutoCAD and Microstation; private site investigations, evaluations, and cost estimates relating to

On October 7th, the lecture was on Civil Engineering. The Presentation lecture was by Ned J. Araujo. Mr. Araujo introduced himself as a ‘Civilized Engineer’ with a PE titled. The PE title is known as a Professional Engineer as a requirement to receive the title of PE, one has to complete a four year degree at an accredited university and also work under a PE for two years; with also taking the FE (fundamentals of Engineering) exam and the PE after thereafter. Mr. Araujo started off the lecture by giving us, his educational background, originally from Brazil. Mr. Araujo began like most of us at Community College, he attended Cerritos College. Soon after he mentioned he struggled to come up with a way to pay for university, so he joined the US Navy Construction Battalion as a reservist.…

They have it under the subject civil engineering. Some parts of research include laboratory investigations of soil behavior with modeling of their behavior with strong foundations with dynamic loads dynamic loads and the development of soil. Every structure on earth is founded on soil and or rock. Geotechnical engineering relates to our bridge because our bridge is being built near an area that has soil. Material engineering is the value of our materials. Our materials have been rich in value because we want our materials to be safe and want out bridge to…

I decided to pursue civil engineering because, I can easily solve problems and can think outside of box. Civil engineering requires the ability to use physics and problem solving in real life situations. These are things that come easily to me and I enjoy doing them. I have chosen to attend NAIT because it offers one of the best programs for engineering in Alberta and the classes are not as large as other colleges. I am going to accomplish my goal by first taking all of my required classes in high school. To even enroll into NAIT’s engineering program I must have taken and passed Math 30-1, Physics 30, and Grade 12 english and have passed with 75% overall grade. To prepare for my transition from high school to college, I will work during…

As often as possible, I read issues of the NCE magazine. I enjoy learning of developments in the Engineering world, and taking a look at new projects. I recently read ‘Structures: Or Why Things Don’t Fall Down’ by J.E. Gordon. It helped me to gain a greater appreciation of the link between design in natural structure and the adaption of these ideas for a construction application. The chapter on Walls, arches and dams was particularly interesting to me, as it put formulas that I had come across in my Physics studies into practice, and gave them a real sense of importance and utility: they became not only numbers on a page, but real solutions to important construction issues.…

Civil engineers play a very important role in society. They design roads, airports, dams, bridges, parking lots and other infrastructures. They may test soil to make sure a building accommodates a site, complete surveys of land, read blueprints, analyze water flow and supervise construction. Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. If this sounds like an interesting career path, read on to learn how to become a civil engineer.…

The field of Civil Engineering has always been an interest of mine. Since freshman year of high school this has been my desired field of employment. This course has brought to light various aspects that I will be able to use in my future career choice. The first of these areas comes from Perceptual Organization and Perceptual Constancy (Griggs, R. A. (2006)). This particular area covers a set of perceptions that are very valuable to a person in the Engineering field. The Gestalt Theory of…

In my quest for deciding what course to pursue, I also did a 6-week internship with Larsen & Toubro limited, at their under-construction ICICI Bank building (Composite Structure). Here, I was thoroughly exposed and actively involved in the various stages of construction, i.e. Planning, Field Execution, Safety Measures and Quality Control. This gave me a very good and generic idea on Civil Engineering projects, right from when it is conceived to the finishing stages.…

Thin-plate weirs are commonly used as measuring devices in flumes and channels, enabling an accurate discharge measurement with simple instruments. The calibration formulae of such devices rely upon some empirical coefficients and there is a need to obtain new accurate physical data to complement the existing evidence. In the present study, the discharge calibration of a large 901 V-notch thin plate weir was performed using an unsteady volume per time technique. The V-notch weir was initially closed by a fast-opening gate. The sudden opening induced an initial phase of the water motion dominated by the free-falling motion of a volume of fluid in the vicinity of the weir, followed by a gradually-varied phase, during which some seiche was observed in the tank. The relationship between water discharge and upstream water elevation was derived from the integral form of the continuity equation. The results yielded a dimensionless discharge coefficient Cd ¼ 0.58 close to previous experiments for 901 V-notch weirs. The findings showed that the unsteady discharge calibration of the V-notch weir yielded similar results to a more traditional calibration approach based upon steady flow experiments, allowing a rapid testing over a broad range of flow rates. & 2012 Elsevier…

In addition to being enthralled by the case study that required creating the dam’s profile in ANSYS and studying its material properties as well as various types of loads that acted on the structure after meshing it, I grasped the fundamental purpose of the Finite Element Analysis. Needless to say that my work introduced me to the challenges of conceptualizing, creating and constructing structures that could resist and outlive seismic shocks and boasted of longevity. Also, I had found my calling –arriving at novel methods of contributing to mitigate the effects of earthquakes and its implications on existing as well as future structures by becoming a student of earthquake and structural…
