Sophia Sparknotes
In the beginning of the story sophia is twelve years old and is aware of all the bad things happening around her. She first witnessed a man being hung in front of anyone who was willing to watch. She was flabbergasted by the dramatic event. Her family took in a man by the name of john andre. He was british and sophia's family believed him to be very polite due to the current events in town. Sophia immediately gravitated towards him. John andre eventually left and sophia was really hoping he would help her see her brother, william. He would not help sophia. She took it upon herself to bribe the guards at the prison so she could get in and see her brother. Everyone in the prison looked starved and it was very gruesome. She was overwhelmed with joy when she saw her brother and she really missed him but he looked terrible. She talked to him for a bit then left and wanted to come back and bring him some food but she had to get enough money to bribe the guards first. She came back a few days later and the prisoners were transported somewhere else. She found three other …show more content…
She is still sad about her brother but a few people have some plans for her to help her get revenge. A proposal is made to sophia to become a spy for the americans. She isnt getting any support from her parents but she does it anyways. She sees john andre again in an very important house she working in but he doesn't recognize her because she changed physically. She is one of the maids that goes with john andre to meet some people that were supposed to be helping the americans but are really helping the british take down Washington. It was unsuccessful 3 times. Sophia takes it upon herself to leave the ship and walk to where they were supposed to meet up next. She meets a woman and her husband and they are fishermans. They offer to let sophia go with them to the same spot. She agrees. Sophia is slowly getting closer to exposing andre but she cares dearly for

    The story begins with Sophia and her mother witnessing the hanging of Nathan Hale, a patriot spy. This was very traumatizing to Sophia and, had she not seen it, she would have never done what she did over the course of the next three years. After Sophia and her mother arrive safely at their house, along with Sophia’s father later on, they were forced to let a loyalist soldier live in their house with them. His name was Lieutenant John Andre and despite the fact that he was the enemy, he was very kind and Sophia began to fancy him. Sophia had to work at Mr. Gain’s printing shop to support her family because prices had gone through the roof and Sophia’s father could not go into work because he was injured. Meanwhile, John Andre often “flirted” with Sophia and her crush on him only grew. One day when she and John Andre were out walking, Sophia got a glimpse of her brother. Her family was very worried because he went missing a little while back. Anyways, Sophia’s brother, William was with a crowd of patriot soldiers heading towards King’s College which was now a loyalist jail. Sophia was able to visit her brother once by bribing a guard, but the next time she went she learned that he had been transferred to another jail, the sugarhouse.
