The autobiography, Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton tells the amazing story of faith, perseverance, and fighting to do what you love. Bethany Hamilton is just an average girl growing up in Hawaii. She loves the surf, the sand, and the sun, but one day she is in an almost fatal shark attack. Bethany is faced with many tough questions subsequent to the shark attack. Bethany has to learn how to surf with only one arm if she wants to continue her most beloved passion. This develops the plot of the story; Bethany learning to get back on her board and start surfing again. The author, Bethany Hamilton, was able to put her own thoughts into the book, since the book is an autobiography. For there to be her own thoughts incorporated throughout the story, it was very elating. To read about what she was thinking while she was going through many different situations was eye opening. Bethany adds in many positive lines which keeps the reader reading like:
“And every so often I see pictures of myself with both arms and I feel a twinge of sadness. But I’m working-we all are-to get over it. To deal with the new challenges. Past is past. On to bigger and better!” (Hamilton 197)
The excerpt is a great example of how well the author puts in her own voice, making the story much more gratifying.
The theme of the novel is to keep doing what you want to do; don’t let anyone change your mind; fight for what you love. Bethany Hamilton worked hard to get back to surfing after the accident. It was extremely difficult, but she was fighting for what she loved in life. She encourages everyone to get back up on their feet and keep trying. Nobody could just sit there and not realize that this girl’s journey has brought people together, and showed them that even at the hardest times, things can get better.
Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton is a very motivating story that many people can relate to. Anyone could read this, but most likely they should be at a middle school
