SOUTH YORKSHIRE NEWSPAPERS PLC
INTRODUCTION
South Yorkshire Newspapers plc produces local evening newspapers for the South Yorkshire area. Each editorial centre produces and distributes a nightly newspaper Monday to Saturday and the Sheffield centre produces an additional sports newspaper on Saturday evening.
The group was formed in 1954 by the merger of several individual local newspapers, some of which have since ceased to exist. The major editorial centres are now Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley. Although the Sheffield sales region does extend into Chesterfield.
In the UK newspapers are produced for morning and evening consumption. In the immediate post-war period there was a high level of demand for newsprint, this has been subsequently affected by the increase in popularity of other mediums, such as television. The major effect has been an overall reduction in the quantity of demand for newsprint. The consumer taste has also changed demanding higher overall quality, quicker reporting speed and accuracy and a wider range of non-news topics.
The market for morning newspapers has in overall terms declined because of the pressures of other news mediums eg Breakfast TV. The only newspapers to survive these changes have been the ones having a national or major geographic distribution. Daily morning newspapers whose circulation was primarily localised have over the post-war period been systematically withdrawn from the market.
