The topic for my CPP is the correct labeling of laboratory specimens in the outpatient setting to prevent patient harm by decreasing errors. The QSEN competency for proper specimen labeling is safety. The QSEN defines the competency of safety by reducing the risk of harm to patients and staff members with safety guidelines in place and proper training (QSEN Institute, 2017).

Despite the significance of this problem, there is not much data available requiring further research. Many hospital organizations utilize the barcoding system for processing and tracking specimens. There needs to be additional studies done to evaluate errors for problem resolution. Research completed so far, reveals that specimens can be misplaced in the laboratory creating research data collection inaccuracy (Martin, Metcalfe, & Whichello, 2015). In addition, hospital organizations have different processes in place for specimens. Therefore, analyzing the efficiency of barcoding specimens can be challenging without a universal protocol.
My proposed solution to specimen errors is through education and training of a safe and efficient process for specimen labeling, tracking, and pick up. This CPP implements the use of barcoding the high risk specimens, with a tracking log. Barcode specimen collection is a newer technology in the last decade in lab draw areas, but is now being utilized in outpatient offices where specimens are collected as well. This system allows for accurate tracking of specimens and eliminates patient identification errors (Trask,
