When I injured my knee, I was a Junior going into my Senior year of high school. I was at cheer tryouts practicing with one of the girls a few minutes prior to entering the tryout room to perform in front of the judges. While practicing, the girl and I collided while doing a jump sequence and I landed wrong. Then, I felt a pop in my knee before looking down and seeing my knee was dislocated. I instantly fell to the ground and began to cry not because I was in pain, but because I knew that I could kiss my cheer career goodbye. The first words out of my mouth were a few choice words followed by me vocalizing that I knew cheer was no longer in my future. After dislocating my knee, I was taken to the hospital by my parents. The hospital said I was fine and said it was a sprain and that I would be back to cheer in six weeks maximum, but of course my parents wanted a second opinion. Upon seeing me he instantly informed me that my injury was far worse than the hospital had led me to believe. He prescribed an MRI and needed me to follow up with him afterwards. I was in excruciating pain during the entire process. When I followed up with the surgeon, he informed me that I had completely ruptured my ACL, destroyed my shock absorbers in my knee and completely tore my meniscus in my left knee, and the only way to repair the damage was a total reconstruction of my ACL and meniscus through surgery and a year of physical therapy. I had surgery shortly after and a procedure that should’ve lasted 45 minutes became a two hour 30-minute surgery due to extensive damage the MRI failed to detect. After surgery, the doctor informed me that he had repaired as much as he could but even like that I would never be 100% and that he recommended that I stopped cheering if I wished to be able to walk 30 years from then. At the time, I had already been in cheerleading for nine years and basically thought that my entire life revolved around cheerleading, gymnastic, and technical theatre.
