I was having one of those I-don’t-want-to-tumble kind of days. I was at tumbling class at my cheer gym, Pride of Illinois, in Collinsville. Tumbling class started at 6:30 and we started off on a white blow-up tumble track. I was waiting in line to take my turn. It was finally my turn and I did a back handspring, toe touch, front tuck all connected, but when I did my toe touch my ankles rolled in and I fell down. I was in so much pain that I felt like I was dying. I figured I broke my ankle because I heard my ankle snap. It snapped like a piece of celery getting snapped in half. My tumbling coach took my shoe off so he could look at my ankle. Once he took it off, he knew it was broken. He wrapped a bag of ice onto my ankle to keep the swelling

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

Ever since I was a sixth grader, the first three things that I wake up to see are my alarm clock, planner and pen. Regardless of it being a weekend or a weekday, I always start my day with a schedule. One of the biggest lessons I have is to limit my time on TV, social media and my cell phone. I have learned to plan breaks and I can stick to them.…

I could play both sides of the field so it didn’t matter to me which position I played. While we were in practice I ended up getting hurt and injuring my leg. While I was making a tackle, one of my teammates stepped on the bottom half of my leg, right under my calf. I couldn’t practice for like two days due to the injury but I ended up coming back but I could still feel the effects of what had happen. Everything was all good until somebody ended up stepping on the same exact leg and this time it hurt worse than ever. I limped over to the sideline and fell on my back in pure agony. The pain was excruciating. My coaches ran over to where I was and checked on me, I told them what had happen and they just told me to get up and try to walk on it. It hurt at first but I eventually fought through it and got back on the…

Two years ago, on a cold Saturday morning, I prepared for my first ever track tryout. I took a shower, put on my clothes, and got into the car. On my way to practice, I felt strong physically, but I also had an undefined, jittery feeling about how the day was going to go.…

With only 3 days until our trip we were in full throttle gameplay mode and I was on the starting team’s side. Our coach decided to put the tallest and strongest hitter on the team on the other side of the court and had us try to block his hits. I was of course on the net ready to block and when he jumped into the air I followed putting everything I had into the block to stop his monster hitting power. Bam! In mid air I had managed to cover his hit but when I came down to land I had stepped under the net and consiquently landed on his foot sending me tumbling to the floor. Instantly I knew something was wrong and I crawled to the bench in agony. I was given a bag of ice and some tape to wrap it up my swollen…

While trying to fight back tears from the intense throbbing pain that I felt in the back of my leg, I told the coaches that my knee was on fire and that I could not put any pressure on it. In that moment Coach Meyers told everyone that practice was over and for everyone to go home. Coach Feriend, the junior varsity coach, ran to go and get Sefa, the athletic trainer. After being examined and stretched by Sefa, Maddie-Jo went to the ice room and got me a gigantic bag of ice to keep on my knee until game time. For the rest of the morning and afternoon I did everything that I could to keep my knee stretched so that I would be able to play when seven o’clock came around.…

We have an Injury!” Finally, it was dead ball and I could finally hobble off the court to our bench. I had tears streaming out of my eyes like a waterfall when my mom came to assist me. She wanted me to take off my shoe so I started to when suddenly Aysia’s mom told me not to because it would swell up even more than it already was. So then I sat on the bench and patiently waited for our game to finish. The next day I missed school to go and get x-rays and crutches. The crutches were extremely hard to use because I didn’t know how to swing my body with the crutches but eventually I learned. After a prolonged time I received my x-rays and it turns out I had a hairline avulsion fracture so for the next two months I would be stuck in a walking boot and eventually move on to a brace. Now that I have had this experience happen to me I know to now always be careful while…

I was at practice one Wednesday night of January the 11th, in the middle of a defensive drill In which I planted my foot and put all my weight on it ready to turn the ball handler. Then made a quick few steps then dropped to the hardwood I was in a world of hurt. I quickly grabbed at my leg grimacing with pain as my head laid back. I tried to hold back tears, after receiving help to sit down I could feel the cooling of ice on my leg, however, I wasn't able to pinpoint the exact part the pain was coming from. My dad had to come and pick me up and I could not put any weight whatsoever on my leg for literally three days. My mom took me to get an x-ray the next day, the doctor said: “Well the x-rays don't show anything let’s wait a while and if you still have any complications then we’ll schedule an MRI.” About a week and a half went by until I finally got the MRI it took about an hour and the machine kept giving off these strange loud noises it was weird. Then we had to wait for a few days to get the results, It was that Saturday at six o'clock that me and my brother and sister were at my grandma’s then my mom called asking to speak to me I picked up the phone not expecting what I was about to hear, “Cameron, the results came back and you have a completely torn ACL, you need to come home and get back on the crutches.” It felt like I just got shot, I was not expecting a torn…

There I was, on the field of the Navy Football Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland with a tightly wrapped ankle due to a sprained ankle. The adrenaline was pumping through my veins and an uncontrollable shaking of my legs took over. My marching band was about to step off and compete for the national championship of the best high school field corps in the USSBA division. The previous day I had badly twisted my ankle while playing basketball. The morning of my competition, I was incapable of walking due to the pain and massive swelling in my ankle. Afraid of further injuring my ankle, I decided to skip school to give my ankle time to heal in time for the competition that same night. Unfortunately, my injury ended up being much more severe than a simple rolled ankle. As nationals started to get closer, I became more nervous because I still could not walk without the help of crutches. Discouraged and doubtful that I would be able to perform in the biggest and last competition of the year, I decided to sit out the competition thinking that it would be best for the band if I did not perform with my injury. Thankfully from the encouragement and positive energy from my friends and other band members, I decided to make a last minute decision and suit up for my final competition. With the support of the rest of the band and my teachers, I began to feel more confident about myself to be able to perform without being a detriment to the band.…

“Graduation, the hush-hush magic time of frills and gifts and congratulations and diplomas.” You weren’t lying when you said that Maya Angelou. May 19th, 2013 I had dreamt of that day for almost four years. I know I can’t be the only person who feel this way. I remember it as if it was just yesterday. So many different emotions going through my mind all at once. Happiness, Sadness, I felt relieved because it was almost over but at the same time I felt anxious and overly excited to just leave and go far away. 389 seniors were going to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. After all, our class had the biggest percentage of graduates who were actually…

Tapping the table anxiously waiting for that buzzer to finally beep, I am ready to end this. beep, beep, beep. My self control wasn’t always the best. I would speak my mind often. My mouth was at times as fast as a Nascar and as out of control as a tornado. I was at a debate tournament and I was about to ask the opposing team my questions about the South China Sea conflict. Probably a hamster. I have the ability to move faster then my structure would probably suggest to other people! Different types of hamsters have different needs when it comes to company. Some need to be kept on their own and others need other hamsters around them. I think this speaks for me a bit as I am content to work on my own, and get on with it when I am required to but also do work well with others when that is expected of me, and like a hamster I am quick to learn when given new challenges. Inquisitive but I won't go all 'gung-ho' until I understand what is ahead of me and how to approach it the best…
