My Labyrinth In The Soccer Field
My thread is my passion, my daily grind for soccer and running track. I lost my thread when I tore my ACL completely on April 1st in a soccer game, and it took a long time to get my thread back. My labyrinth is how to bounce back from having such a significant surgery happen and not to give up on sports like most do when this happens. My orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Jason
Jones is my Daedalus. He created a new ACL for me out of my own hamstring graft instead of using a cadaver, which my body will most likely reject. The hamstring is more suited for someone of my petite size, rather than the patellar tendon graft, which is more commonly used in football players. Daedalus created the Labyrinth and is known for his cleverness and intelligence,

The overall goal from after this surgery and recovery was to go back to how my life was before. I needed to find the strength and courage again to have the power to step foot on the soccer field without completely psyching myself out and have fear control me. Ryan Schaefer, who is my physical therapist and trainer, has torn both his ACLs several times and had excellent advice and relatable moments. Ryan is my Araidne, he helped me through my worst just like she did for Theseus. In the story I relate to Theseus because I am trying to find my thread after this surgery, and conquer my own version of the Minatour which is ACL reconstruction surgery. At the end of July is when I started to get back my groove, I finally was allowed to start jogging a do mild biking, but in reality I would run and bike almost every day to help boost my confidence and strengthen my knee. My whole summer was about my recovery basically, I went to STAR Physical Therapy three times a week and worked out on my off days to help put me a little farther ahead than the usually 6 months it takes people to be cleared for sports. I was cleared for all sports after

It all started with my interests in orthopedics. This year, I decided to take Sports Medicine in school. After covering several football games, the athletic trainer John let me tend to the wounds and had me question the athletes about their injuries. One night, a Miramonte student athlete injured his leg severely while playing a football game against Alhambra. He was a sixteen-year-old football player whose leg initially seemed twisted compared to the other leg. Later, the knee swelled up. I helped him to the sidelines and began the routine tests, starting from his history of injuries to the specific motion tests. After having observed the swelling, I felt my way around the knee and moved it relative to the rest of my body. With the ways he felt pains, I explained to the athlete that the ligament was probably torn, and he needed to see a doctor quickly. But, since I was a trainer and not a doctor, I was not certified to provide a diagnosis. I could only advise the athlete the basic rest, ice, compression and elevation before seeing an orthopedic doctor later that night. The next day, the young man returned with a cast on his leg to thank me again and told me that the doctor verified the torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)…

Even though the doctor told me I can’t play again I still think that if I work hard maybe this coming season I might make a push to play football. Rehab was a long and gruesome period over 6 months. Although I had an amazing physical therapist named Alex I still never want to go through it again. After my second surgery I took part in a series of tests that tested how strong my knee was and would determine if my surgeon would give the approval for me to play sports again. I was one of the first kids to take part in the test and actually failed my first time going through it. I passed the second time and just in time for basketball season.…

Olympic Gold Medalist and track star, Donovan Bailey, once said, “Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard, and above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams.” I aspire to follow my passion for sports, science, and helping others through my profession so that I can enjoy my life to the fullest. My dream is to become an Orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. By doing this, I would be able to stay connected with sports, explore medical research, help others, and serve my community. For those who don’t know, an orthopedic surgeon is a surgeon/physician who has to operate on injured bones and muscles in the musculoskeletal system. This career is embedded within the health/science career cluster. I enjoy playing all sports from cycling to football. Having experienced multiple fractures myself, I have always been curious about the latest research in this field. As an orthopedic surgeon, I would feel privileged to serve all my fellow sports enthusiasts and help them get back to their game as soon as possible.…

This changed how I now approach situations, by being more proactive instead of waiting to do it later. The nine months without volleyball seemed excessively long. I had never gone that long without playing the sport that I love, but with my time off I was able to learn about the coaching side of volleyball. I was able to grow very close to my father, who is a volleyball coach, which he says helped me to become a well-rounded player. Once I was able to come back it was hard. I had to relearn the approach to accommodate my weaker knee. I spent many long days in the gym trying to get back to how I used to be able to play, sometimes to the point of tears since I couldn’t improve. Eventually I began to play like I normally would making me confident for when I tried out for the varsity team in the fall of my senior year. I was able to return and make it onto the varsity team and then decided to play one final season of club with my dad as the coach. I thought I was safe from reinjuring until one tournament where I landed and my knee popped. It felt like my world was falling apart again. Luckily I had not retorn my ACL but this made me put more work into strengthening both of my knees. I am glad to now be out of this journey and on to a new journey in my…

I have deepened my theoretical knowledge as well as practical aspects by treating patients post-operatively as well as teaching total knee & total hip replacement exercise classes. During these classes I was responsible for ensuring all patients were supervised, supported and encouraged whilst carrying out exercises using equipment including an Alter G treadmill, exercise bike, wobble board, trampette and other equipment to aid in their rehabilitation. Throughout my time as a physiotherapy assistant I have learnt the important qualities needed from a physiotherapist including working well within multidisciplinary teams, building a rapport with patients assisting me in motivating them, ensuring they stick to given exercises, measuring and reflecting upon their progress and empathizing at all…

At eight years old I participated in my first gymnastics competition. No matter how crazy I flipped or twisted, somehow I always landed on my feet. It was my innate talent, and others took notice. In our local gymnastics club, I watched the older girls practice their routines. I desperately wanted to learn how to flip just like them. Even at such a young and impressionable age I quickly adapted to a disciplined lifestyle based on dedication and self-motivation. Learning new and exciting ways to defy gravity became my passion. My hard work paid off as I found myself a Level 10 gymnast (one level below the Olympic level) at only 13 years old. I missed out on most of my childhood because I was practicing and perfecting my routines six days a week, three and a half hours a day. I battled serious injuries and overcame major setbacks. But it was all worth it at the end of the season knowing you're a state champion and qualifying to Nationals. Receiving a full athletic scholarship to a Division I school was no longer a dream but becoming my reality. Then it was all shattered last summer when I blew out my knee on a dismount landing off the uneven bars. July 3rd, 2006 I underwent reconstructive surgery including a total ACL replacement. I developed a strong relationship with my orthopedic surgeon, his nursing staff, and physical therapist throughout my rehab. But this was my third knee surgery and…

    Dance Injury

Dancing, primarily ballet, has been the main focus of my childhood (from age three and beyond), as well as early teen life. In many ways, it is what defines me; how I see myself as well as describe myself. But, My ballet career was forever altered when, in 2008, I did a lunge in a primary class with the Artistic Director at the San Francisco School of Ballet and landed ever so gracefully which dislocated my knee. The pain was immediate and in many ways indefinite as it has negatively affected my dancing career. My plans for the future, for college, and work, were all changed the instant I landed on the sap-like sticky, rosin (adhesive crushed rocks to make point shoes not slip on floor) covered floor. Only now do I realize the need to recover emotionally and mentally from that injury. Having my patella (knee cap) dislocated changed not only my dancing abilities for the next few years, but also my mental state, my will power, motivation, and perseverance.…

When I woke up from the surgery, the nurses informed me that I needed to put weight on my leg to begin regaining my strength and motion. After murmuring a few choice words to them, I tried to explain that I had just had surgery and there was no possible way that that was going to happen. I also asked, “Did they take the thing out of my leg and put it in my knee?,” referring to the surgeon sewing together a hamstring graft and remaking my ACL. (Transition) After leaving the doctor's, the next stop on the road to recovery was physical…

One small and stupid muscle had way too much control over my life - my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It was a perfect May evening for soccer practice, when I decided to change my dribbling direction and suddenly a huge “POP” sounded from my knee. The next thing I knew, I had dropped to the green grass beneath me. Right away, Coach Nick and my parents knew I had tore my ACL, an extremely serious injury for a soccer player. Once I realized how bad my injury was, I knew I had to accept that this one soccer season was over and I needed to face this injury as an opponent in order to beat it and recover.…
