After the heated War, the United States Congress approved the Treaty of Paris on February 6, 1899, by a two-thirds margin (57 to 27). Even the following day, President McKinley signed the treaty. Along with the United States officially controlling Spain's former colonies, such as Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The United States emerged as an imperial power, from the Treaty of Paris.
While being under the treaty's terms, the U.S. has now gained possession of the countries…, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines,
but not only gained the Philippines, but received $20 million. As for Cuba, the U.S. could neither keep it without going back on the Teller Amendment, nor release the island without abandoning it to the revolutionary aims of the Cuban insurgency. Regardless the U.S. supported for the pro-American candidates, Cubans elected the more radical forces of Cuba Libre, while forcing policymakers in Washington to reinterpret the Teller Amendment.
