St. George Saints
St. George

People worldwide look up to saints for various reasons. There are saints that are dedicated to very specific people, things, and events, that everyday people can relate to. Saints are those people who have done something in their life worth recognizing, that brought them to eternal life in heaven with God. Saints are ideal examples of how we should live our lives, because as Catholics, we too, strive to ultimately get to heaven after our earthly lives. The examples the saints have given us in their lifetime motivate us to be like them, which in turn, makes us be like Christ himself. Of course this is not to say that the saints have lived completely perfect lives, since only Christ himself was born sinless. Despite this, the saints are wonderful examples of how we should live, and share a special connection with us, being that they were totally human, like you and I.

Today, there are many ignorant people who don’t bother with their faith, and refuse to find out more about it. Then you have the people who will make you feel dumb for believing in what you believe in, or will try to convince you that it’s pointless. We can learn from St. George that God’s rule becomes before all earthly rules, and that we must look to obey him before all others, even if this means facing consequences or discrimination. There will be times when you will have to stand for what you believe in, even if you’re standing alone. St. George portrays this perfectly in his story. St. George also teaches us that the material gifts of this world are not comparable to the gifts we will receive in heaven. St. George is offered riches, land, and slaves which is everything a man could’ve dreamed of in that time period. Still, St. George stays focused on his ultimate goal: being in the presence of God in eternal

“We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don't have to sit in no bar room blowin' in our jack jus' because we got no place else to go. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us.” p. 7 (Chp. 1) This is said by George in an effort to reassure Lennie. Although he is responsible for the well being of his friend Lennie George doesn't view his responsibility as a burden, but rather a bond between the two. Similar to that of a family, he enjoys the company of Lennie, is always there for him, and imagines a future with him.…

George never dwelled on things too much, whether they were big or small. In New Orleans he was supposed to catch a boat to India but he missed it. He didn't care too much, he just went back to Texas and moved on with his life even though he missed a big opportunity to see more of the world. In George's time, racism was bad, and he wasn't treated equally to a white man. On his way to Cleveland George found out that he had gotten cheated out of his money when buying train tickets in Marshall, the man gave him a one way ticket instead of a round trip. George could have retaliated, but he didn't worry too much because he knew that there wasn't a thing he could do about it. He worked around the situation. When George's daughter got cancer, he was saving money to build a new house, but she needed help with paying for the cancer treatment so that's what the money went for. Unfortunately his daughter died. George could have dwelled on the situation and thought about what else he could have done with his savings, but he didn't regret any of it. Worrying about things only takes the joy out of life and makes you overthink. George did not worry about things, or have regrets and that helped make his life a little more…

In the story, George makes an effort to find Lennie before the rest of the farmhands because he wants Lennie to die peacefully. Readers can see this when George says to Lennie, ¨Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from ’em …. No, Lennie. I ain't mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want ya to know” (Steinbeck 106). George understands that a confrontation between the farmhands and Lennie would only result in a painful ending to Lennie’s life. Thus, George ends Lennie’s life out of sacrifice, because he sacrifices his friendship with Lennie to ensure Lennie’s well-being. In doing so, George shares his humanity with Lennie because he places Lennie’s well-being over his own desire for friendship. Therefore, Steinbeck shows how sacrifice is important when sharing humanity because he demonstrates how humans can deem someone else’s needs more worthy than their…

Saints are those who follow Christ and live their lives according to His teachings (Richert). They are known as the standard operating models for human beings. Because a saint is Holy, they know both the bad news of sin and the good news of salvation (Kreet). Catholics honor the saints because they are known as model Christians and practiced great virtue during their life on Earth. We can honor the saints by imitating their holy lives, praying to them, and by showing respect for their relics and images.…

Furthermore, George is correlated to Galahad, best known for being the knight that achieves the Holy Grail, because in the end of both of their tales the pair are “dismounted, armed only with a fading dream, a long way from Camelot” (Davis 65). Ironically George is kneeling by the river, having just killed Lennie and their dream, and is far away from his dream farmland. Even more paradoxical is the contrast of Galahad and George in that Galahad actually achieves the Holy Grail and George does not achieve is Holy Grail, comparable to the American Dream. Another, inference found throughout the story is the relationship between George and Lennie to the story of Cain and Abel. In a fallen world George and Lennie want to retreat back to their Eden much like Cain but “in the post-Cain world human fellowship cannot survive and neither can their dream” (Benson 56). In congruence to this Biblical story, George and Lennie’s dream is doomed much like Cain’s want to retreat back to Eden because paradise is already lost for Cain when he kills Abel and lost for Lennie and George whenever Lennie develops attachments to things. In addition because of Lennie’s…

Saint William of York remains an excellent role model even hundreds of years after he lived and was canonized a saint. Throughout his traumatic lifetime, William never failed to lose hope in becoming the archbishop of York, even though it took about 14 years to actually earn the title. His perseverance is vital to his appearance as a role model because without his diligence, William would have never become the successful Archbishop he was at the end of his life. People should look up to Saint William because it appears that recently, society makes it seem okay to give up on your dreams and what you are passionate about; Saint William reminds us that if we stick to our goals, we will be rewarded. Furthermore, a few months after William was elected the Archbishop of York, he was killed in a baffling way by one of the Archdeacons of York by poisoning the chalice used in mass. This strange death is relatable to people who…

Little seems to be know about George,s childhood but there have been many stories. One story says he was strong enough to throw a silver dollar all the way across the Potomac River which was about a mile wide. The most famous tale however is the tale of him chopping down the famous cherry tree. When George was around six years old he received a hatchet. He loved his hatchet and chopped down everything that came his way. He was chopping down his mothers pea sticks one day when he came across a beautiful large cherry tree. He tried cutting the tree but could only cut away the bark but he cut so much of it that it died. The cherry tree was his fathers most priced possession. He would not trade anything for it. When Augustine discovered his dead cherry tree he was so very angry. He confronted the young George. Instead of lying or making excuses George simply said, “I can not tell a lie, father, you know I can not tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet”. He told his father the truth which made Augustine proud to have an honest son.…
