St. Joan of Arc was born on January 6, 1412 in Domremy, France. She grew up in poor family to Jacques d'Arc her father. Picking the veggies and fruit in gardens to earn money. At 16 three voices came to her in the garden and told her to talk to Charles the French dauphin. She traveled to Vaucouleurs the French stronghold near her home town. She told the captain of the garrison about the voices she heard. He didn't believe her and sent her home. She came back in 1429 and asked again. The captain was impressed by her determination and piety and allowed to to talk to the dauphin in Chinon. She was dressed in men's clothes and accompanied by a small group of guards and she was granted audience. The dauphin his himself amongst his courtiers and Joan was told to find the dauphin and she walked over to the disguised dauphin and kneeled at his feet and asked to be able to fight i the war. She told him about the voices. He questioned this and sent for theologians in Poitiers. They concluded that it was true and Joan was allowed to fight.
At the battle of Orleans Joan earned her nickname the “Maid of Orleans” winning a decisive victory over the English.
She led the French into Orleans leading them holding the French flag that had the French words Jesus and Mary on it.
The battle of Orleans was in a series of of decisive battles for the French. Joan could enter the city on the eastern side unopposed because a French sortie had the English distracted on the western side of the city. This allowed her to bring crucial supplies the the French soldiers that had already been sieging the city for a while. Joan led a passionate resistance, and continued to lead the French on to battles. On May, 7th Joan was struck by an arrow and she quickly bandaged her wound and continued to fight, the French won the battle on May 8th, and the French retreated from
Orleans.
Over the next five weeks Joan would still lead the French into battle winning battles over the English, and Reims, the traditional city for coronations was recaptured in July. the same month king Henry VII was crowned king with Joan kneeling at his feet. Joan never hurt or killed anyone instead she served as more of a morale boost for the soldiers carrying her banner instead of a weapon. She was leading another attack against the allies of the English the Bourguignon that was still occupying a part of France. The French lost the battle and Joan of Arc was captured and sold to the English. They tried her and she was convicted a heretic and a witch the English burned her at the stake on May 30, 1431. One of her many quotes she used to lead men into battle was I am not scared… I was born to do this.
