This is a simple definition; however, the complexity and diversity of occupational therapy has more breadth than presumed. After making the decision in pursuing the path of becoming an occupational therapist, my friends and family developed a consistent misconception towards my career goal. My loved ones would scrutinize me by asking: why would you want to exclusively focus on handwriting skills or what if the individual is retired and doesn’t work; how would you practice occupational therapy? Everyday I see the pain in her eyes, because she is a prisoner in her own body. She has trouble verbalizing what she wants and in turn she would hysterically cry. Every fiber of my body knows I will become a phenomenal therapist, not only due to knowledge and background, but also due to my ability to emotionally empathize and see farther than what might not be articulated. The pain and suffering that I see in my sisters eyes has been my fuel to earn a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology, which taught me the fundamentals of human movement and wellness throughout the lifespan. I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with my mentors and principle investigators in their psychophysiological laboratory during my Master’s of Science program in Kinesiology. In this context I was able to work with exceedingly ill participants including children and adults with functional and mitochondrial disorders. I believe my resilience, insightfulness, compassion, and desire for wellness is what sets me apart from most applicants. My life is centered around the therapy I do with my older sister. If it were not for our teamwork (describe more on the teamwork and what it involves), she would not be in the exceptional state that she is in currently.
