I’d like to return to college now because I have reached a stage in my life, where I can truly appreciate the value of a college degree. I have been in the workforce for many years now and I have worked at some great places, have experienced and learned many things, and met some wonderful people along the way. However, my ultimate goal is to have a career and not just another J*O*B*. I know and understand how vital a college degree can be to a persons’ life and overall, personal, professional, and financial success.
In the past, when I attended college, I lacked both the motivation and the determination to study for and earn my degree, as I didn’t have a clear goal in mind. I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in life
and lacked direction and focus. However, I am older and wiser these days and have a much better focus on how and what I’d like to study. There have been always been subjects in school that I have always wanted to learn more about. These areas of interest are primarily, Criminal Justice and Social Work and I hope to earn a degree in one or the other of these fields or maybe even a combination of the two. I have always enjoyed Criminal Justice studies and I am eager to know more about certain aspects of the field, especially; Criminal Profiling and Behavior. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had a pull towards Social Work and the Human Service professions, specifically; domestic violence and child abuse. Many years back, I interned for the Department of Health and Human Services as a caseworker in the Children’s division. I really enjoy listening to, encouraging, and supporting others and think that a degree in Social Work or a related field could be very helpful and beneficial to me and my professional future. I’ve also completed a training program in victim sexual assault, called VASAP (Victim Awareness and Sexual Assault Program). Both were done in Montgomery County, Maryland.
I have been researching career options, for quite a while now and in my search have discovered the field of Victim Advocacy. I am anxious to know more about this topic and possibly earn my degree in such a program, in the near future. I think I’d not only be good at but enjoy working with crime victims and their loved-ones. I know work such as this, would be quite challenging and of course, rewarding. I believe Victim Advocacy would also be a good choice for me because it would blend the areas of crime and behavior with the social relations aspect. Ideally, I really want to feel like I am truly making a difference in someone’s life and the world at large.
I have researched various program and degree options at several schools around Maine, and think that USM, could help me to reach and achieve my goal of becoming a college graduate and finally, earning that elusive but all important degree. I welcome and look forward to becoming a University of Southern Maine student.
