Misconceptions exist when the people only know very little of a group and don’t take time to research and make opinions of their own instead they just choose to go along with what the majority believes. Business owners/leaders tend to have a bad image on them due to how their company operates. There are many cases where people’s envy towards them, lead them to talk bad about them cause they have a so much money and appear to not help others out who are in need.
Simply a misconception is a stretched lie that has spread throughout people because of how absurd it seems and it's usually believed because people don't check to see if it's correct or not.
An example of a misconception would be that the Great Wall of China can be seen from space, it's been proven that in fact that with the naked eye it is not visible due to the fact that it's too narrow. That kind of misconception is widely believed by the grand majority of people, although not factual it perceives as the truth because it has been ingrained into people as the truth due to its popularity. Stereotypes are similar to misconceptions except that they are partially true. In About Men by Gretel Ehrlich she explains the truth about the cowboy attitude, cowboys attitude compared to the stereotypes that are believed due to the way they were portrayed in western films and Marlboro advertisements. “If he’s “strong and silent” it’s because there’s probably no one to talk to” (Ehrlich). During the time period where western films were very popular the image of a cowboy was portrayed differently than it actually was to make it more interesting for the film. Typically in the films they were seen as strong, silent, rough around the edges and the reason that they portrayed this way was to romanticize them to make the movie more interesting. This is a reason why some stereotypes are created to basically benefit a story of a film/book, and in these cases when they make a stereotype others
adopt it because of its popularity of the film/book.
Nowadays, certain stereotypes have been accepted widely by the general public because of how they are used in the movies, tv shows, etc. Depending on the type of character they can either be given a positive or negative stereotype for their group of people. In these types of situations it is good to have stereotypes either positive or negative, it helps make the story interesting and overall is beneficial. The downside to having these stereotypes popular in movies, book, etc… is that many people see them as also true in reality. They don’t really realize that in the real world it’s not really like that, but then again there have been situations similar to the movies or even worse which makes it even harder to get rid of the stereotype. In almost every type of group there is a stereotype of them, although it might not generally be true the fact is that a small group of people is what ruin the credibility of major groups.
