Still I Rise Analysis

The two readings I chose to compare and analyze how they represent one or more of Marywood’s Core Values are A Good Man by Mark Shriver and Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. The core values that can be seen in both of these writings are excellence, empowerment, and respect. A Good Man Rises is about a father-son relationship, where Mark Shriver tries to learn much about his father’s life and apply them to his own life. Maya Angelou’s poem is about her outlook on her life. Both A Good Man and Still I Rise contain similarities and differences that portray excellence, empowerment, and respect.
Marywood’s Core Value states that “Excellence is manifesting Marywood University's pursuit of the highest level of achievement in support of Sanctitas, Scientia, Sanitas". Excellence is portrayed in both writings. They both express ways to better themselves, and ways to a better outlook on life. In A Good Man, excellence is portrayed by the life of Sargent Shriver. He tried to better his life and the life of the community as well. Everyone looked up to him and showed appreciation for the things he has done to change lives. In Still I Rise,
Both writings portrayed empowerment clearly and show how each person is confident in controlling their life. After reading Still I Rise, the reader feels ambitious and aggressive enough to make a change in his or her life. Maya Angelou speaks as though she is superior to everyone else. Despite what others say, she will think and do what she believes is best for herself. She aims to be the best person she can be. In contrary to Mark Shriver who tries to empower the reader to be more like his father, rather than himself.
