Marywood’s Core Value states that “Excellence is manifesting Marywood University's pursuit of the highest level of achievement in support of Sanctitas, Scientia, Sanitas". Excellence is portrayed in both writings. They both express ways to better themselves, and ways to a better outlook on life. In A Good Man, excellence is portrayed by the life of Sargent Shriver. Both writings portrayed empowerment clearly and show how each person is confident in controlling their life. After reading Still I Rise, the reader feels ambitious and aggressive enough to make a change in his or her life. Maya Angelou speaks as though she is superior to everyone else. Despite what others say, she will think and do what she believes is best for herself. She aims to be the best person she can be.
