A Stoic is a person who is seemingly indifferent to or unaffected by joy, grief, pleasure, or pain. One who is not touched by the outside world seem to live inside themselves always thinking that today might be the last. Stoics detach themselves from things of this worlds including objects, people, and to a certain extent their own lives. In Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations and Epictetus’ Discourses they both explain how to properly be a stoic, learning to deny their feelings, respect themselves and nature, and detach themselves from the useless things of this world.…
My mother and father have taught me different techniques to live life. When I was in high school I obeyed my parents, but I did not understand why they said certain things until college. In high school my parents would tell me to control my emotions. When they told me to control my emotions I thought how can people have sovereignty over their emotions. In my freshman year of college, I realized what my parents meant. I am constantly put into high stress situations where I need to exercise control of my emotions. For example, when I take a math test I get very paranoid and anxious but I learned to conquer my feelings by taking deep breaths and rationalizing the situation. I usually breath and remind myself of where I am and that I am going to finish the test with my best effort that I can give within the time allotted. Plato's Allegory of the Cave portrays prisoners who have been held captive in chains for their entire childhood. The free prisoner was unable to use any preconceived knowledge from childhood. In contrast, I will always be able to rely on my parents’ influence on me as a child. At first, my parents shared words of wisdom with me, and I would listen but not truly understand. In college, I have dealt with many situations by using the lessons my parents taught me as a high schooler. My parents’ words have given me insight for the future so that I am able to become an independent…

The Stoic metaphysical idea of cosmic determination illustrates the necessity of living in harmony with nature, or the entire cosmos (the universe). In Epictetus' The Handbook, he explores the constructs of Stoicism and the ideals of being at one with nature. The Stoics believe that the universal nature of the world is a well-organized system that falls in accordance with the will of their god, Zeus. Stoic metaphysical notion of cosmic determinism implores that all events which occur with the world are a part of a rationally structured and providential design. Conversely, the Stoics’ did not believe in chance or randomness within a well-organized system, which implicates that metaphysical determinism is a cosmic nature that is identical to…
Epicurus says that Pleasure is what we pursue and, what we come back to, but for him pleasure stems from lack of pain. He believed that a life on moderation brought the most pleasure that over indulgence was unhealthy and brought pain. The simple things in life bring the most pleasure. He believed that mental pain was worse the physical pain. He explained mental pain a disturbance of the mind. He urged prudence in our pursuit of pleasures, and that all other virtues spring from it.…
Emotion affects our motivation in many ways. For example, there are many people in society who have a fear of failure. We all have our own idea of what we consider failure to be. However, the thought of not obtaining self-actualization in whatever aspect, is a fear we all experience in some capacity. Due to this emotion, we as mankind are motivated to achieve personal goals on a daily basis, in hopes of reaching the high level of hierarchy to self- actualization.…

Socrates’ attitude about philosophy, was that every person, choses to do good. Even though it may be a bad or evil decision, to them it is a good decision for them. He believed no person had intentions of evil or wrong doing and if they had knowledge of wrong doing, they would choose to do good instead.…
The Stoic mindset or philosophy is to not let the outside forces affect you. That you can conquer anything when you ignore such thought of doubt and concern. It was to be believed that you have handle on situation at a time instead of all your life challenges at once. It was believed that gladiatorial games were bases these Stoic ideals that Marcus Aurelius’ created. The gladiator games were the most horrifying games that can be played that were used for entertainment. Gladiators were often slaves who fought til death against each other, prisoners, wild animals such as lion and tigers. When going into these types of circumstances you’ll never know the outcome. Like Aurelius had said, “ Don’t fear ( or even have an opinion of) anything no…
There are many elements that tie into the stoic idea. Living in agreement with nature. You must only consume what you need. “To live in agreement with nature requires embracing and making good use of all events that unfold in this rationally structured universe” (Stephens, 20). Using fate well and understanding that whatever conditions one finds them in are meant to…
He focused that the maintenance of the soul was the key to achieving and maintaining a life worth living. One of the main characteristics he stated can be simplified to just doing the right thing. Socrates further declared his point when he explained that one should do the right act regardless of the circumstances. During his trial, when asked if he was ashamed of valuing the right thing now that his life is at stake, he began to defend his beliefs. He responded, “if you supposed that a man who is even a little benefit should take into account the danger of living or dying, not rather consider this alone whenever he acts: whether his actions are just or unjust” (28b). This is explaining that the consequences of an act are truly irrelevant when it is the right thing to do. Socrates ultimately believed that an expert in living well does not easily get confused in situations they encounter, they have a set mind on what they feel is right and should not let fear deter that in any way, which is a perfect example of his respect for conscientious…
Through Aurelius’ education as a Stoic and Confucius’ teachings from his wisdom, both authors had similar viewpoints with regards to allowing a strong morally capable to lead by example. If this leader could rule through their ability to discipline themselves, act calmly and with purpose and lead not by force but by their own characteristics to their society, then - that according to the authors - is how one should do it. Through the analysis of what each author means by their teaching and by interpreting the evidence in a historical context, the paper aimed to show that both writers take closely similar approaches to social philosophy. Taking the texts from a simple reader’s perspective both Stoicism and Confucianism are close to one another in how to chose the right ruler. From a historical context both texts came from roughly the environment, a declining empire which was starting to fragment. Thus in conclusion despite many differences, both writers as philosophers and leaders had a common dream and goal for how the leadership of their respective societies should be…
there is a strong belief that decision should be based upon reasoning rather than emotions but where does this reasoning come from? Emotions are always primary, after one sorts out their emotional reactions then comes the intellectual response and a decision is made. This is why many people are in the belief that emotions get in the way of reasoning. When we gather importance to something we attach feelings not conclusions or reasoning.…
Throughout history, the main emotion people have focused on is happiness and how to achieve happiness, but since the 1950’s, emotional issues and diseases have become more prominent. The end goal of most individuals is happiness, but individuals ignore the fact that all other emotions matter. There are many reasons why other emotions matter, but the two main ones are that because often, the constant pursuit of happiness leads to disappointment and because we do not know the true definition of what emotions are or what happiness is. People need to start caring and pursuing other emotions because at some point in life, they will go through those emotions…
