Story Of An Hour Literary Analysis

The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is about this girl names Mrs. Millard, she is married to this guy and she has a weak heart. Well she gets this news that her husband had died in a car accident and she is suppose to be upset. She goes upstairs to her room and stares out the window and looks up at the clouds and notices that she is suppose to be sad and depressed but she is sitting there thinking and realizes that she is not that upset. She starts to look at the good outcome of this and says the word “free” three times and is all of a sudden happy because she gets to be free. Her husband is dead and then she notices that she gets to her live her life for herself and is all happy. Mrs. Millard goes out of her room and starts walking down the stairs and sees her husband at the bottom of stairs falls down and dies right there.
There are many sides based on the story of why she had died, there is one that people think she died because she was sad.
She thought she was going to be free because her husband died and then she sees her husband at the bottom of the stairs and mainly what is going through her mind is the fact she is going to be back in her trap as soon as she thought she was out of it. Her having a weak heart was the main part of why she died but others also think it is the fact she was so upset because she was back into her trap. From the sounds of it she did not have a healthy marriage and that she had noticed it was not good and finally thought she was going to get away from it and then boom she is right back in it because her husband was nowhere near the
accident. There is also this side that think she died because she was extremely happy to see her husband alive that her heart could not take it all and died. People think that she probably put a fake attitude towards the fact her husband died to keep her head up and then hid all of her feelings and saw her husband alive and cold not relieve at the fact it was not true. The reason she could have acted like she was totally okay with the fact her husband died was because she did not know how else to look at it because that was the guy she was married to, it meant the world to her and she had to find another way to look at the fact he was supposedly dead. I personally think that she was not faking at the fact she was relieved and happy that her husband was dead because if you actually loved and cared for someone and they died you would be extremely depressed and would not know what to do. If a wife was a truly happy to realize that her husband is a live then she would be balling before she saw him and as soon as she saw him, because she had just found out that her husband was dead you should be balling your eyes out not come out of the room all happy. For a wife to be able to be happy at the fact her husband died it is shows that their marriage was not the best and she was not happy with the fact she was with him. Her using the word free three times shows that her husband did not allow her to do much and she lived by what he said was okay. I think she died with a broken heart because she was upset at the fact she saw her husband alive once she thought she was going to get away from the situation she was in not because she was happy to see him. There are many sides of the story but you really have to just read the story and understand it yourself and see it from your own perspective. You have to look at it from her reactions and also the words she was saying when she went upstairs after she found out that her husband had died. Her marriage was obviously not healthy and there could have been more details added on why she felt the way she did when she thought her husband died. Reading this story also makes you realize a lot from other marriages and maybe your own in the future. I personally think that she died with a broken heart at the fact she would have put herself back into the trap she was happy about getting out of.
