Straighten Up And Fly Right And Besame Mucho
I attended a live jazz performance when I was in Milwaukee the weekend on April 1st. Vivo is the name of the local jazz band who performed at a local pub establishment, Caroline’s Jazz Club.
Vivo is a contemporary jazz music ensemble that also plays samba and bossa nova music. The group consists of Warren Wiegratz on saxophone, flute and melodica, Pam Duronio, vocals and percussion, and Tim Stemper on guitar. An interesting fact is the name of the group, VIVO, means, "I live" in Spanish.
The musical selections were varied with some contemporary, traditional and samba songs. Because it was a live set, I did not have a program with the name of the songs. The songs I identified were Straighten Up and Fly Right and Besame Mucho.
The lively tune, “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, has lyrics, which is unusual from most of the jazz music I enjoy. This style of music is known as jazz vocals. The song was made famous by Nat King Cole in 1943. The song hit the pop charts with the catchy piano, vocal lyrics, and orchestration because it reflected Cole’s early jazz roots. According to All Music, “Nat King Cole's inspiration to compose "Straighten Up and Fly Right" came from a story in one of his father's sermons, and his song became very popular

The female composer was born in Mexico in 1919, and she wrote the song in 1941 as a heartfelt and innocent ode to a kiss. It was first recorded by Emilio Tuero and the song became a big hit in Mexico in 1941. It later became a huge American hit 1943 for Jimmy Dorsey & His Orchestra, featuring vocalists Bob Eberle and Kitty Kallen. The song was translated into dozens of languages and performed by hundreds of artists over the years. It is a ballad with Latin jazz elements played on guitar and sax. The Vivo vocalist, Pam Duronio, performed the lyrics in Spanish so I looked up the translation and they are very

The quintet consisted of Adam Heller, Kendall Fowler, Chandler Boyd, Dan Sitler, and Tim Henderson. They started off with Blue Train by the great John Coltrane. It had a steady tempo and a smooth sound. The trumpet played by Adam Heller stood out during this tune. It was a great piece that the audience enjoyed thoroughly. The next tune played by this quintet is So Dance Samba by A. C. Jobim. The piano played by Chandler Boyd starts the tune out beautifully. The drums played by Tim Henderson keep the fast beat and tempo. The sax played by Kendell Fowler played wonderfully along with the trumpet played by Adam Heller. Both of these talented musicians stood out. The trumpet took the lead for most of this piece, but the bass played by Dan Sitler and the piano still stood out at portions. This piece ended on a loud note. Their next tune is Grass Fed that was impressively created by their director Scott Routenberg in one day. This tune had a fast tempo and a happy feel. The trumpet played by Adam Heller and the sax played by Kendell Fowler stood out during most of this piece. It was a very impressive and appealing piece. I enjoyed each piece of this quintet’s…

by DukeEllington. The song can be found in Section 1: Basic Musical Concepts, "FolkMusic, Art Music, and All That Jazz."As a referential listener, two things come to mind as I listen to this easy go jazz song by Duke. The first, I remember the first time really hearing jazz musicwas when I was at a dinner banquet for my great grandmother. Since then, Ihave always associated Jazz with a fine dining background music or elevatormusic at a nice hotel or business. The second, is a reference to Duke Ellingtonhimself. I had to a little project on Ellington for Black History month as a gradeschooler. So I am fairly familiar with his music and his life. In respect to my firstcorrelation,…

The song was originally sang by Kurt Flick and though the song is in Cebuano dialect you’ll get the gist by watching the music video. I on the other hand fall in love with Kaye Cal’s version. Yeah, my Cebuano is very limited but the melody alone and Kaye Cal’s soothing voice takes me into a trance where words and meaning becomes irrelevant. It has that calming yet melancholic effect.…
