Youth violence is classified by acts that expand from bullying, sexual assault and physical fighting to homicide. According to WHO (2013), “youth violence has become a global public health problem”, which needs to be appropriately dealt with; the strengths-based approach is the most effective way to facilitate behavior modification, rather than the use of punishment, such as incarceration. The way to prevent youth violence is not to only address the risks, but to also facilitate in the building of strengths in children throughout their development, by means of proper education and positive extracurricular activities. A better option could be to have a mentor that encourages engagement in constructive behavior through therapeutic relationships and group sessions. However, there is an extent to which this can be effective: the community has to have the ability to build on their strength and to commit to creating a system which can influence positive behavior. This could be difficult for communities that have a different standing point on the approach of strengths-base or for neighborhoods who lack to fund to create facilities that contribute to beneficial behavioral changes. According to Cech (2010, pg. 230), “behavior antecedents from the micosystem, mesosystem and macrosystem all work together to have an impact on the child’s life and behaviour”; when the influences of the systems are negative, building a communities’ potential strengths is key to facilitating a healthy environment and behavioral change in individuals. Creating behavioral changes is not to change the individual, but to alter the environment in which they can become successful in their lives.
