Assignment: There are useful aids to reading comprehension. Make a brief presentation of these tools (each group/individual may be assigned any one set of reading tools out of the four numbers) these reading comprehension tools are:

1. Book titles, chapter, unit openers, heading, sub-heading. 2. Advance organizer, logos, and teasers. 3. Italic, bold print, underlining, highlights. 4. Graphic organizers, charts, graph, webs, maps, timelines, diagrams.

* The useful aids that I prefer to use are the book titles, chapter, unit openers, heading, and sub-heading. Why? It’s just simply because of the reason that these five kinds of a useful aids are the main content of a certain books that are useful to get easily comprehend on the text or to a story that we are going to read. Especially the heading and the sub-heading, because there we can get a lot of information that is very necessary, there we can found out what is the/ or what are the content of a story, and the most significant things it contains.

Lesson 13
Activity 3 Divide 1, 500 (or a lower number of words from shorter selection) by the number of seconds it took the individuals student to read the selection. Multiply the answer (number of minutes and seconds) by 60 to get the word per minute a W.P.M. score.
Or simply: Number of words = 1,500 divided by number of seconds X 60 = ____ W.P.M.
For example: (clocked reading time) 6 minutes and 10 seconds. Convert to seconds which will be 370 seconds. Divide 1, 500 by 370 seconds equals 4. 05 Multiply 4.05 by 60 equals 243.

(8 minutes & 10 seconds) 400 divided by 1, 500 = 3.75 3.75 x 60 = 225 W.P.M. ANSWER

On April 19, 1995, at 9:02 a.m., the United States of America was reminded that the worst horror often comes from within. Within a matter of days Americans were forced to realize that this terrible tragedy may have been caused by citizens who call themselves patriots. Until the Oklahoma City bombing, Americans generally though of terrorism as a foreign problem that could not invade the walls of this nation. Many Americans had given little thought to what these patriots sought to do. Militia and patriot groups were considered to be fairly harmless groups who enjoyed stirring people up. The vast majority of Americans did not realize how serious or how dangerous these groups actually were. Very few people could understand why a fellow countryman would wreak such havoc on them. When it was learned that the accused suspects in the Oklahoma City bombing allegedly had ties to political extremist groups, citizens started to give these groups a second, closer look. Very slowly, and over several decades, these fundamental extremist groups and backyard political patriots have evolved into the most dangerous enemy this country has ever faced.…

I read the headings or subheadings of the chapters, captions underneath a picture, illustrations, examples, or any information that is bolded. Then I typically scan the first and last paragraphs to get an overall view of what the topic will cover. Also, I highlight any ideas, concepts, or details that are important to remember and write them down in a notebook using my own words. I keep a notebook for each graduate course and outline the relevant information for each chapter. This provides a quick review of information to aid in answering discussion questions or in researching relevant topics.…
