Lesson 13
Activity 3 Divide 1, 500 (or a lower number of words from shorter selection) by the number of seconds it took the individuals student to read the selection. Multiply the answer (number of minutes and seconds) by 60 to get the word per minute a W.P.M. score.
Or simply: Number of words = 1,500 divided by number of seconds X 60 = ____ W.P.M.
For example: (clocked reading time) 6 minutes and 10 seconds. Convert to seconds which will be 370 seconds. Divide 1, 500 by 370 seconds equals 4. 05 Multiply 4.05 by 60 equals 243.
(8 minutes & 10 seconds) 400 divided by 1, 500 = 3.75 3.75 x 60 = 225 W.P.M. ANSWER
