27 October 2013 1. This essay will explore two of the characteristics of the classical Hollywood style, which is the narrative form(story telling) and the realism and formalism. The narrative form is the overall dominant style in cinema. It follows a set of parameters on how films should be put together. These rules are just basic common sense to the film creators and are what the viewer expects to see. The narrative form usually consists of many basic building blocks or elements. These elements will usually include the introduction of the problem early in the movie. Then as the movie progresses and the characters well established it will logically work through the problem, creating a story. By the end of the movie the problem is usually solved. The narrative form is formulaic. It doesn’t matter who the star is, who the director is, or who the writer is. Most mainstream films you see will have this lay out. Even though this may be the first time you have heard it called by Wong 2 name, you expect to see it in the theaters. It has been around since the birth of cinema, and it will most likely exist far into the future. As far as the realism and formalism stand point, the narrative form is a mix of both. It is fictional, but it resembles the world we know. The style usually draws the line where things become unbelievable. To quota “Citizen Kane” as a example, the background of this film is a story that examines the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane, a character based in part upon the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Kane's career in the publishing world is born of idealistic social service, but gradually evolves into a ruthless pursuit of power.
