Coming Of Age Coming of age has different means to everyone, to hit puberty, to become self-dependent, to go from childhood to adulthood, and even simply becoming mature. Veronica Roth (Author of Divergent) takes you on a journey of her coming of age in a more creative way than most. She’s telling her own story in an entertaining and inventive way. Beatrice Prior was born into an Abnegation family full of hidden identities and a dystopian society full of corruption. When she turned sixteen she attended the Choosing Ceremony every sixteen year old must attend to determine what faction (Amity who value peace, Abnegation who value selflessness, Candor who value honesty, Erudite who value knowledge, and Dauntless who value bravery) they want to be in for the rest of their lives. Beatrice figures out that she would never fit in Abnegation because she isn’t selfless and chooses Dauntless marking a large turning point and the beginning of a new portion of her life. One major event that displays Tris’ coming of age is her obtaining the three raven tattoos. After learning how to fight Albert (Al, Candor transfer, largest of all Dauntless initiates) declares that he wants a tattoo and Will (Erudite transfer, pale and solid), Christina (Candor transfer, tall with long slender legs and a willowy legs), and Tris accompany him. Tris decides to get a tattoo of her own, three ravens on her collar bone using it to signify one for each member of the family she left behind. “Maybe there us a way to honor my old life as I embrace my new one.” (Roth, 91) To compare, Abnegation Tris would have never gotten a tattoo. It would have made her stand out which is thoroughly against Abnegation’s selflessness rule. Although she didn’t intend to get a tattoo, the new Dauntless Tris didn’t even think twice about it, permanent or not. By doing so she’s obviously displaying her reinventing herself and beginning to look like a Dauntless member. Another ‘coming
