This ideology believed that abolitionism did not have to be violent and could be quickly as long as the slave owners were requited. This would include a sort of “buying” the slaves and then letting them free. This would leave the old slave owners compensated and would allow the slaves to go free. Along with no violence this is an ideal solution. Although this idea sounds perfect, there were still problems with it. Some slave owners did not want to give up their ownership of these slaves. Another large issue is where would the government get the money to pay off these place owners. Many felt they were owed this money if slavery was abolished …show more content…
because of the money they had already invested in these slaves.
This is the belief that because of the horrible things done to slaves owners should relinquish their slaves and should not be compensated for their horrible acts against mankind. They did not want to use violence and wanted it to be the last thing done. They think love should shine through everything and it should come and shine through with kindness. A large part of this idea was the religious part. Most of the documents that talk about abolition with no violence reference religion. They talk about how God will come through and help bring freedom to all men.
This option allows for abolition by means of full on war. This allows the slaves to become free while the “bad seed” slave owners are killed in the process. Killing these slave owners help the process of integrating the slaves into slavery by taking out the opposition. In this option as well they talk about how God and Jesus are there for all men and if certain men are not in line with this thinking then they need to taken care of. John Brown makes a good point of this by exclaiming “Now, if it is deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of the ends of justice… (Brown 3)” This shows how white men of high standings were also willing to gives their lives in order to give freedom to the slaves.
They believe that slavery is wrong but it is to big of a part of society to go ahead and get rid of it all together. They think that slowly slavery will by out because of people string to believe all men are created equal. In this day in time it seems idiotic that people would ever think that because racism is still such a big part of todays world. They felt that it would slowly not become important and slaves and owners would become closer and closer.
- What do the proponents of this option think about the words, “all men are created equal?”
They agree that men should be equal in most cases but many were still against this idea. They would have rather had the slaves than the compensation for many different reasons. These reasons include that they believe the long term pay out would be worth more while others just did not want blacks to have the same rights as whites. This was a very selfish view and was held by many even though it would be considered awful nowadays.
They heavily believe that all men are equal and should be treated as such. This is represented in their urgency to get slavery abolished. Because they believe that all men are equal they want to free the slaves without violence hoping that there s little violence. One of the large problems with this is that the slave owners have invested a lot of money in these slaves which will anger these owners no doubt ending in war.
These believers thought that only the men who thought all over men were equal should have all right and freedoms. This is why it was okay to go to war with the other believers even thought they were also men. There is no real thinking that all men are created because they are willing to kill other to get freedom for the more willing.
They believe that all men are equal and people will soon realize this. They also feel they need to realize it on their own. Without them realizing and it being forced up them they feel it could make owners feel like these beliefs are bing forced upon them.
-What are the pros and cons of this option? Compare this option to other options.
Pros: More equality, less crimes against humanity, freedom for all of the slaves, and owners would be less bitter because of compensation.
Cons: Huge financial loss for the government, many angry owners who would rather have slaves, and agriculture would take a huge hit without slaves.
The problems with equality would follow no matter which option was chosen however the compensation would help the owners feel less spite which you would not get with other options. Crimes against humanity would be cut drastically compared to a brute force abolition. Other options don't have compensations so the effect would be less financial to the government unless the war drained their financials.
2) Pros: Immediate abolition of slavery, no loss of money to the government, the salves will get their freedom.
Cons: The inevitable war that will follow, the money loss the government will take from the war, lots of death, and a less united America.
This cause problems for many different people with all walks of life. There is a consistent sense of war in all of these options with this being most likely the 2nd bloody behind brute force abolition because of all the opposition this will hold. The loss of money is also very prevalent. The separation this option will makes hurts America expanding in the future but would not stop it.
3) Pros: Freedom for the slaves, Bad seeds are taken out, the slaves will have a better chance at integrating with the rest of the people.
Cons: Lots of death, Separation of the American people, money for the war taken from government.
This resembles a mixture of the other ideas except for compensation. The initial idea that killing the opposition is good/necessary pushes many ideas past their limits and bring it to a whole new level. Because of this violence it adds an extra flare that the other ideas don't seem to carry and bring more contemplation because this could mean going to war with friends.
4)Pros: No violence, a better overall understanding of equality, a better chance for the pro-abolitionists and freed slaves to respect each other.
Cons: Slavery still going on, the chance that it doesn't die off, the chance any of the sides rise up and have a battle
This offers the least chance of violence as well as the most amount of money saved compared to other ideas. There is still a large chance it wont be effective unlike some other method and will cause trouble in the future.
What are your thoughts on this perspective? Explain.
1) I think this is one of the better options available. This is the most civil option. It still has room for error with protesters agains abolition but then again there will always be anger from both parties. This allows the owners to come off without worrying about loss of income and lets the oppressed blacks have the freedom they rightfully deserve.
2) I think this option would cause more trouble than it would help.
They would be a continuous fight that would last until one side gave out which would not be good in the end. It would also lead to further hatred from both sides of the quarrel. Because this option will lead to lots of bloodshed I do not think it would help.
3) This idea could be viable but would cause a lot of trouble and would effect a lot of the soldiers in the effort to abolish slavery to question whether killing their friends is worth the freedom of “lowly” slaves. Because of this it seems this is more of a last resort option if the slave owners do not take to the idea of abolishing slavery.
4) I think on paper this idea would be the best but in practical terms its just waiting for it to end without any real effort being put into it. This gives a lot of chance for bad things to happen and doesn't allow any growth for the slaves in this time. Without this growth slaves will have fallen into a slump and still be discriminated against. Sadly the American society it has stayed this way. In the long term this idea would be good but these ideas were needed for the salves at the moment.
What two probing questions might you want to bring up in a fishbowl discussion of this
option?
Where would the money come from? What to do about unwilling owners?
How would they prevent violence? Why would the slave owners just give up the slaves?
Would the soldiers be able to kill each other? How would you set up war against your own country?
How would you stop uprisings? Is there a way you have moved on the abolition instead of just waiting?
