The best team that I have ever been associated with, was a team created at work called “The VA-CLC Nurses”. The team was created by a co-worker to run the 5k run in the honor of our fallen veterans. The results were very favorable considering the fact that we were able to recruit a lot of people to join and we all worked great together. The leader maximized the team’s strength by communicating to all of us on how to put our differences aside, and on how to come together for a greater cause than our own. She organized us into small groups depending on what duties needed to be done. Which included, uniform designers, transportation, also a person in each group to keep an eye out for our children on the team and a group to…

Leadership is a very important role as a nurse. One strategy that enables a nurse on an interdisciplinary team to exert leadership without occupying a formal leadership position is being a problem solver. Effective problem solving is indispensable to leadership. Problems arise from every aspect of healthcare such as patients, staff, and other medical personnel. Identifying and resolving problems ensures quality care and outcomes. Being a problem solver also gains the trust of the staff, colleagues, and patients, providing knowledgeable information and resources. Another strategy that enables a nurse…

In addition, the report also recommends nurses to be full partners with the physicians and other members of the healthcare team to effectively increase the quality of care given to the patients (National Research Council, 2013). Because nurses are such strong advocates for patients, it would truly benefit the patient to have nurses participating in leadership roles. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, embedding leadership development into the nursing curriculum will have a positive effect on the amount of nurses fulfilling leadership roles in their healthcare setting (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, n.d). As a nurse, I have seen plenty of new graduates over the years. As time goes on, it is evident how better prepared and more motivated the new graduates are from the previous graduates for these leadership roles.…

A group of people with a similar goal can accomplish more together than they each could alone. I see those around me as part of a team, whether they are co-workers, classmates, or individuals I depend on for a service. Though it is not related to healthcare, working with V'z Modeling & Learning Academy has allowed me to demonstrate leadership skills. My role as Operational Support Specialist requires communicating with other families at my site and maintaining contact with our other site to keep everyone updated, assisting the director with planning shows and practices, and directing backstage activities during the show to maintain smooth transitions and correct any issues that may arise. Similar characteristics are required for pharmacists as they delegate pharmacy tasks and collaborate with other health care providers. Creating an atmosphere of mutual rapport between each discipline through cooperation, respect, and communication improves the outcome of medication therapy for a…

I laid in a cot in my own section of the surgical center. I was about to meet my anesthesiologist for my arthroscopic knee surgery. An anesthesiologist is in charge of administering anesthetics “prior to, during, or after surgery or other medical procedures” (“Anesthesiologists”). The anesthesiologist entered the room and greeted me. She was going to be in charge of my life while I was under. She had to give me just the right amount of anesthetics. Too much and I would perish. Too little and I would awake during surgery and feel every tugging motion inside my knee. Outside the operating room far off is an observatory where an astronomer is hard at work. What he does is fascinating and fantastical to my eyes but it would not be something I would like to do full time. Becoming an anesthesiologist is what I decided to do because it is more of a true full time job, it requires a lot of work, and it is overall a career that is both exhilarating and interesting for me.…

Teamwork may contribute to increased staff well-being as well as improved patient outcome. In order to effectively teach and reliably assess the quality of teamwork, it is necessary to identify the behaviours associated with effective teamwork and their interplay in relation to clinical performance ratings and ultimately to patient outcome. The main challenge to established teams is to maintain enthusiasm and momentum. This can be achieved by promptly overcoming workload obstacles, resolving conflict between individuals and giving timely feedback on performance. Staffs need to know when they do good work and once the momentum is built, it is easier to maintain and transfer across a number of activities. Overall team performance relies heavily on the individual commitment and contribution of all its established members. The effective established teams are characterised by team members who are enthusiastic, communicate trust to their time efficiently by concentrating on the most important work assignments.…

The results of these studies reinforce the evidence that nurses contribute to the effective functioning and communication of the trauma team. A study that introduced a nurse team leader improved the perceptions of a nurse led trauma team within the ED (Clements et al., 2015). The leadership role for a nurse leading a trauma team requires the nurse to oversee the trauma team resuscitation in conjunction with the medical team leader. It is important that they work together to ensure the smooth running of both the medical and team elements of the resuscitation effort. The concept of overseeing the team enables the nurse to compile a well structured team which is known to work more effectively (Cooper and Wakelam, 1999). The culture of the trauma…

Two strategies that enable a nurse on an interdisciplinary team to exert leadership without occupying a formal leadership position are to be a role model and to be an advocate/problem solver. The nurse can be a role model for the interdisciplinary team by showing respect for other team members, having effective communication skills and to accept others input in a fair and unbiased fashion. Often there can be tension among team members and a nurse can lead the team away from negative comments by redirecting the conversation to stay on task at hand. The nurse can explain that every person of the interdisciplinary team plays a role and that no one is more important than the other. The nurse can remain positive when people complain and show leadership by not “joining in” on the negativity and this will show leadership by keeping a positive attitude and one may be able to redirect team members. The nurse maybe able to “help develop team principles of respect, cooperation, commitment, and a willingness to accomplish shared goals.” (Cherry, 2011) The nurse can also show leadership by being an advocate for staff, by helping them learn new techniques and finding answers to the questions that arise. Nurses can also take information from the interdisciplinary team to the staff therefore keeping them informed.…
