How person responds and copes with traumas can differ based on development, coping mechanisms, and personality. The Martinez family is dealing with the aftermath of a Tornado (Laureate Education, 2013e). Miguel’s wife, Jeanette is noticing a change in her husband Miguel. He is not himself since the Tornado. Two Counseling Goals
As a counselor, a goal I have in Miguel’ situation is to provide insight into his situation, and help acknowledge and deal with his depression.
I would also like to help Miguel discover what he identified as doing something meaningful with his life. I would use Client centered therapy.
The second goal I have is to help restore effective communication between Miguel and Jeanette. My first step would be the secret sauce, to sit and listen, and hear Miguel and Jeanette’s story (Laureate Education, 2013e). As a counselor, it is important for me to understand and explore the cultural component of the family. Miguel’s family is Hispanic. I would need to know how the Hispanic / Latino culture addresses and deals with depression, and or PTSD.
Two Interventions for
Wellness
The first intervention for wellness I would suggest is journaling for Miguel. This would allow him to express what he is feeling inside. In addition, journaling, may also lead to Miguel discovering what it is that he wants to do to create a meaningful life.
Miguel appears to have distanced himself from his family. I would recommend one family night per week to help restore the bond and closeness with this family.
