Deborah “Deb” Barnes is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor employed at Valley Hope (VH), a private residential treatment facility located in Cushing, Oklahoma that specializes in the treatment of substance use and codependency disorders. When I walked through the door at the end of the Lecture Hall I paused, unsure of whether I was in an office or a playroom. Deb explained that her office is used as the unofficial storage room for behavioral therapy props because she enjoys having the stuffed animals and other toys around her. She invited me to take a seat next to a Teddy bear, and for the next hour I interviewed her about aspects of group therapy that is conducted in the facility. Deb taught me much about how her group members are assembled,…
When you have a big heart and the need to help people, you want to do it correctly and have programs in place to improve their quality of life. When you start an organization you need to have a plan. The company needs to have in place what the services will be; so that the clients will know what the organization is all about and if they can help them with their needs. Today, we have an overabundance of citizens who cannot afford good, quality medical care. The Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center, Inc. (BPMC) is hoping to change that. We are going to be a non-profit dedicated to the citizens…
There was the actual group leader Andre, and then there was a woman, Christy, who helped him lead the group and keep everyone on task. She also was the groups contact person, and filled out all the forms for peoples parole officers, help house leaders, etc. Then there were 3 or 4, depending on the night, members who wanted to be in control of the group. Two of them were actually beneficial to the group and provided them with helpful stories and commentary. Then there were the other two who just seemed to want to interrupt the group just to share something they thought was important, but not something that helped the group or went along with the group discussion. I think this was very challenging to the group overall, there was a lot of whispering going on while these members talked, whispers of “someone shut him/her up” “I can’t stand it when he/she shares” etc. I think that the assigned leaders should step up and quiet them down or try and get them into some type of individual counseling. It is a tough situation though because if they are asked to leave the group or quit sharing it may lead to a relapse or them just not attending meetings anymore because they feel unwelcome, and that is not beneficial at all. You could see that the leaders were trying to keep things on track and had subtle ways of trying to quiet a person, but it didn’t always…
As a psychotherapist, I have been assigned the task of analyzing Madame Defarge’s behavior. Madame Defarge was a violent woman and I wanted to look into the downward spiral that ended with her death. I have spoken with many people who knew Madame Defarge, including her husband and Miss Pross. I have come to a conclusion that Madame Defarge’s violent behavior roots back to her unfortunate childhood.…
Group counseling includes psychiatric treatment where more than one patient meets together with a therapist at the same time. Some groups are specific to a certain topic or issues that all members with the group are interested in or a problem that they are dealing with such as substance abuse, others may be involved in a group that is more for support such as a support group for parents struggling with children with autism. Groups have different topics but those attending a particular group are all attending for the same reason, they want personal growth. (Jacobs, 2012) Jacobs (2012, p.3) says “Although there is still a place in a community agency for individual counseling, limiting the delivery of services to this model is no longer practical, especially in these tight financial times. Not only do groups let practitioners work with more clients, but the group process is a unique learning advantages.”…
I am grateful of the physical therapists who allowed me to observe them over the years. How often ethical issues arise in the field is one of the numerous aspects I learned during my observations. Initially, I assumed physical therapists provide care and guidelines address any uncertainties. A variety of issues surfaced during my time observing. I had to consider how I would handle a patient capable of living alone, wanting to be referred to a skilled nursing facility. There were also issues of workman’s compensation and illegal aliens. This is an aspect of becoming a physical therapist that I had not originally pictured. Not everything in the healthcare field will be straightforward. One therapist sought guidance from another person on the…
When providing counseling services to individuals or a group of individuals, one needs to be cautious on his or her approach to everyone’s specific needs. Even though there are a variety of methods to solving a problem, some methods encounter ethical dilemmas. The ethical dilemma is about Jane, a counselor at a community college, who starts a relationship skills group for nine individuals between the ages of 18-25. In her primary course of action, she encounters several ethical dilemmas: she fails to provide sufficient information about the group in an advertisement, encounters ethical problems within the enrollment process, fails to provide an informed consent to the enrollees, and puts the other attendees at risk of harm. By identifying the code of ethics involved and the moral principles within her primary course of action, Jane is able to purpose and evaluate several options that she can properly apply to her final course of action, eliminating the ethical dilemmas.…
Using proper ethics in occupational therapy means placing the patients’ needs above the therapists and being fair to the patient. As an occupational therapist, one must make sure the patients’ needs are always met. Keeping patients’ personal information and progress confidential. The patient always has a right to privacy.…
Ethical dilemmas and multicultural issues are things that you will come across in your professional career. When we seek the assistance of a counselor in schools or in any other setting we want to know that what we share will not be shared with others. We want to feel comfortable and know that our standards and ethics will not be violated. While working in a school setting we came across Amy who is a 16 year old African American high school student. She went to talk to her high school counselor Mrs. Hill and revealed that she is pregnant but she wants the pregnancy terminated. She has her boyfriend Michael support. Michael is 17 years and currently still in high school. Amy doesn’t want her mother to find out about her pregnancy. She feels…
In this scenario, there is a 16 year old female client who presents in my office with her mother. Her mother states, that the client has been distant, grades has been slipping and she has been skipping school. Mother states that she just divorced her father and had to pick up extra shifts just to pay the bills. She does not have that extra time like she use to, where she was able to attend the extracurricular activities and support her daughter.…
It is important when during the pre-group screening to clearly explain the importance of confidentiality for group. Also while on this topic, I would explain the prospective group members their rights. In order to encourage open and active participation group members need to know the purpose, structure and ground rules. Because this is going to be a heterogeneous group and very diverse group over all, therefore it is common to have ethical issue in a group that can arise from many factor such as from cultural background, race, ethnic and cultural heritage, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, abilities, and religion and spiritual beliefs, and to valuing and respecting differences, these are just to name few. Ethical issues can take part from both sides from, from leader to a group member or member to member. For example, a member who has a lot in common with a leader and they always have such great conversations. One day the group member asks the leader to stay little longer because they have another issue that they would like to discuss and the leader is more likely to extend a session for them, compare to if someone else had asked. If another member would have asked the leader may have said “you know I would really like to hear more about it, so why don’t you write it down and we can go over during the next session.”…
This paper will discuss some of the many aspects of ethics encountered in the mental health field. A mental health professional was selected to interview and provided information to this student on this topic. The areas of ethics discussed during this interview included clinical ethics in the daily life of a working therapist, boundaries, therapeutic relationship, safety concerns, mandated reporting, informed consent, confidentiality and therapist self-care. This paper will describe and summarize the interview, including my reaction to the interview, my inner dialogue, what I learned in the interview process and how my expectations regarding ethical practice have been influenced or changed by the interview process.…
Over the past several decades the advancement of group modalities in the mental health profession, has brought about several potentially challenging ethical and legal scenarios that pertain specifically to confidentiality, privileged communication and privacy in group work. The inherent power of therapeutic groups to bring about personal change for members has seen increasing recognition in recent years in the mental health profession (Corey and Corey, 2006). Historically however, individual therapy was viewed as the most effective form of treatment, and group therapy was a less crystallised alternative (Glass, 1998). Markus and King (2003) suggest, “There is a wealth of evidence that group psychotherapy is as effective as individual therapy in treating a range of psychiatric problems’ (p203). As professionals are asked to conduct more groups today then ever, it becomes essential not only for the safety of every client, but also for the psychologist and the profession, that a thorough grounding in the ethical standards is established (Durr).…
My personal view of helping someone is based upon my own past experiences for both myself and my observation of others. Person-centered therapy may not work as well with people who find it complicated to discuss issues about themselves or have a mental illness that misrepresents their perceptions of reality. However, I believe that Person Centered Counseling is an approach which emphasizes the clients responsibility to take control of their own experience. In this approach the client is given the tools and encouragement to make their own decisions and realize their own potential for growth. Person Centered Theories were developed by Carl Rogers. Throughout his years of experience working with clients it was Rogers goal to assist people feel influential and be in command of of their own lives.…
As I had mentioned, it has never crossed my mind that I would need or have the opportunity to attend and/or participate in any type of therapeutic group setting. Therefore, when I went over the syllabus I was shocked to find out that I would have this type of experience. I was not sure how or where to look for a group but I reached out to some family members that I knew were participating in some type of group. Unfortunately, it was evident to me that it was uncomfortable for them to let me know where they went and to have me observe a session. Fortunately, I was able to locate a support group through the local hospital. The evening of the group I found myself extremely nervous about this new experience. I understand that it was due to the…
