Friday. T minus 15 hours till the last day of camp. The Saturday volunteer cancelled. My game plan was crumpled up and trashed. “Why hadn’t I thought of backup plan?” I asked myself, on the verge of pulling out my hair. I hadn’t taken into account all the variables and now I was receiving the repercussions. I had no idea becoming the Transportation Coordinator for a camp would be so stressful.…

Leadership is a very powerful trait that many wish to possess, but only few have the ability to appropriately carry out the task. It is a trait that is not only God-given, but also learned throughout life as we are given many leaders to observe as we journey throughout childhood and into adulthood. With my service in the military approaching 28 years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve under some very talented leaders within my varied career in the Air National Guard. I’ve also been given many opportunities to travel to a variety of places and countries that most people that I grew up with in Mississippi only dream of visiting. Since joining the Air National Guard in 1989, it has been a rewarding career both as an enlisted…

The role of a leader is challenging task to take on, especially when you're a young boy. As proven in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, in order to be an effective leader, you have to have no moral character. Being a leader without moral character leads to more effective ruling, because your followers will obey you more than a ruler with moral character, who tends to be more lenient with their style of ruling. The challenge was taken by originally taken on by Ralph, who with moral character, tried to keep the island in order, and Jack, who without moral character, ruled more efficiently and had more people listen to his orders. Being a leader without moral character, such as Jack, is more effective than being a leader with moral…

After reviewing Module Six “Leadership and Followership”, the concept that I felt was most important was Diversity Awareness. The reason it is the most important is because when everyone joins the military, every person does not necessarily know, where the person standing next to them are from or what type of culture they grew up in. With that being said, Diversity Awareness is important because we have to educate ourselves and our Airmen to identify and respond to the requirements of different individuals, which is diversity awareness. By doing so, we grow working relationships which affect the efficiency of a person, the duty that they are undertaking and ultimately the mission.…

The Battle of the Wilderness began in the morning of May 5,1864, when Confederate corps led by Richard Ewell clashed with the Union’s 5th Corps near the Orange Turnpike. The fighting was chaotic, as the trees were thick and also the undergrowth made it difficult to move. As reinforcements arrived on both sides that night, Grant ordered an attack at 4 o’clock a.m. the next day. (2) After 5 a.m. on May 6, the Union, led by Winfield Scott Handcock, attacked the Plank Road. Fighting was even more intense than the day before, smoke and fog forced soldiers from both sides to shoot blind. With little idea at whom they were shooting at, Longstreet, who led the Confederates, was shot by his own men accidentally in the shoulder. At dusk, Lee ordered…

Sweat trickled down my brow as I raised the sledgehammer above my head. As the loud crack of splintering rock rang through the air, I felt a sharp tinge of pain in my arms caused by my many hours of laborious work. Thoughts of pride, community, and accomplishment are spinning through my head. This is the culmination of my Boy Scout career. I thought back to the beginning of the week when this all started.…

It all started in the summer of 2010, where I was sent off to Massachusetts for the next seven weeks. I was going to Camp Winadu, which is a summer camp that my dad attended from ages four to nineteen. My Dad and I boarded our flight at O’Hare, and during the whole two hour flight I was nervous about being away from my parents for almost two months. Adding even more onto my nerves, I was the only camper that wasn’t from the East Coast. After we landed, I was whisked away in a van (in a good way), and taken through the rural parts of New York and Massachusetts that I never knew existed. When I arrived, everyone was playing basketball on the court by the lake. Most of the kids knew each other, but I knew nobody. I was a stray dog. Everyone hung around for a few hours before we were sent to our cabins, where I of course knew nobody. Something else that I also didn’t know was that Winadu was an ultra-competitive sports camp.…
