Within the Boy Scouts of America I have spearheaded many events and have held a multitude of positions such as,
Patrol Leader, Order of the Arrow Representative, and Apaunic Chief. These offices have served to cultivate my prowess as a leader, and have bolstered my work ethic.
As Apaunic Chief in the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America, I have had a lot of experience in coordinating events, guiding, and training others. I have prepared meetings, and executed them assiduously and efficaciously. I have also planned many events, one of which encompassed an Ordeal, a weekend in which scouts chosen for candidacy by their troops are lead in service projects whilst maintaining a strict vow of silence in order to become a member of the Honor Society of Scouting. …show more content…
After two years of leadership in my Apaunic, I stepped aside to let new leadership in so I could focus predominantly on obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
However, my leadership roles did not cease after that. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, I had gone through an audition process to become the Drum Major for the Liberty High School Marching Band. This process included: receiving signatures of nomination from peers, attending scheduled workshops teaching how to lead the band, a teaching evaluation, a parade route evaluation, submitting a formal application essay and a leadership questions form, receiving a letter of recommendation, and an
interview.
After acquiring the position I attended a Drum Major Leadership Camp, held at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in order to prepare myself to teach and lead my band. I also took part in a leadership camp with my band council in pursuance of learning to function as a unit.
During my time as Drum Major I helped to plan and facilitate events, such as, a week long summer band camp and a drumline camp. I have also planned and directed rehearsals in order to teach the band how to march, learn halftime show drills, and prepare them for parades. Through this position, my teaching skills have been augmented as well because I have been put into situations where I have had to learn how to explain things in different ways in order to cater to people’s specific learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Through developing these skills I have been able to take people who have had no prior knowledge of marching and bring them up to levels that rival that of our senior members.
However, regardless of my many accomplishments, my journey is not yet over and the academia, atmosphere and community your university offers would help me to grow further and broaden my perspective on the world and myself.
